Joyce Alyce Flaharty, the daughter of Clarence Paul and Ruth Lillian (Foster) Carpenter, was born Aug. 29, 1933, in rural Clay County. She graduated from Lake Center High School in 1951, and attended Hamilton School of Business in Mason City. Joyce was baptized in the Langdon Methodist Church on Jan. 22, 1950, and joined the church April 9, 1950.
