Steven “Steve” Baumgarn, 77, of Las Cruces, New Mexico, formerly of Royal, passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2025, at the Solstice Senior Living in Las Cruces.

A celebration of Steve’s life will be held at a later date in Las Cruces and in Winterset. Burial will be held in the Silver Lake Cemetery in Lake Park.

Steven Marvin Baumgarn was born on May 21, 1947, in Spirit Lake, to Marvin and Rose (Ihnen) Baumgarn. He graduated from Royal High School and later earned his bachelor’s degree in fishery and wildlife management from New Mexico State University. He also served his country for six years in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War. He was united in marriage to Ann Kirchhoff on June 19, 1971, in Sumner. Together they moved around the states of Iowa and New Mexico while Steve worked as a Department of Natural Resources officer specializing in surface water management.

In his free time, he enjoyed fishing, watching football and reading. He was a member of the ELCA Lutheran Faith attending church in Las Cruces. He was also a member of the Lutheran Brotherhood, Habitat for Humanity and sat on the Utility Board for the city of Las Cruces.

He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant brother Stanton Baumgarn.

He is survived by his wife, Ann Baumgarn of Las Cruces; daughter, Ursala Britt Marinan, and her husband Gerald Gilliland of Greendale, Wisconsin; son, Chris Karl (Dulce) Baumgarn of Winterset; grandchildren, Ethan Baumgarn, Avery Woodford, Joe Baumgarn and Julia Baumgarn; great-grandson, Milo Salinas; and his sister, Sheryl (Al) Olson of Altoona.
