Baseball battles: Big innings, late runs account for 1-1 start to week

SPIRIT LAKE — Host squad Spirit Lake had its big seven in the second while Spencer rang up six in the fourth, but ultimately single runs by the Indians in consecutive innings — the bottom of the third, fourth and fifth — led to the 10-9 win Monday night in Lakes Conference action.

Trierweiler earns pair of pitching wins

RUTHVEN — Five runs in the third propelled the Sioux Central girls to the win, Monday at Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire Football. A run in their final at bat allowed the Rebels to double up on the Titans, 8-4.

“A strong pitching performance by Matilyn (Trierweiler) kept hitters guessing while timely hitting provided the necessary run support we needed,” said Jessy Bibler, Rebel softball coach.

Boys pick up pair of Twin Lakes wins

RUTHVEN — If you look at the stats — nine runs on 12 hits including two home runs and nine stolen bases — Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire wins their home game with Sioux Central’s boys going away. But the game Monday was played on the field, not on paper.

BVU archery receives $10,000 grant from Clay County Pheasants Forever

STORM LAKE — Buena Vista University announced a $10,000 grant from Clay County Pheasants Forever to fund the development of a new 3D archery range on university property. This transformational gift will allow the BVU archery program to expand its competitive offerings, host youth 3D camps and offer new outdoor educational experiences to the community.

Tiger boys split against the ‘Woods’

COUNCIL BLUFFS ― As a team, Spencer hit for the cycle Saturday against Glenwood in Council Bluffs at Iowa Western College, in Lewis Central’s tournament; and George Lawson was a triple short on the cycle in a 12-2, five-inning early stoppage. The Tigers produced at least 1-run an inning and freshman Maxx Techen went the distance on the hill to earn the win, allowing two hits ― one earned ― and struck out five.

Tiger softball picks up road win

COUNCIL BLUFFS — Tara Hauschen, Spencer’s coach, suggested Saturday included two well played games in Council Bluffs, despite losing against Glenwood and Lewis Central.

“Was nice to play teams we don’t normally get to see during our season,” she said.

Jersey Vail and Emma White both pitched well during the day, Hauschen complimented.

Lucy Simington had a home run against Glenwood.

Estherville ends contest early

ESTHERVILLE — After a 6-1 loss at home against top 10-ranked Estherville Lincoln Central, Monday, the two teams would meet Thursday in Estherville at the Iowa Lakes Community College softball field, earning the 11-0 shutout win.

Coach Tara Hauschen said she was extremely proud of the girls and their fight.

Late game heroics

ESTHERVILLE — Through the fifth inning, Estherville Lincoln Central held a 6-0 advantage, and although still within Spencer’s range, the Midgets appeared poised to get the home win, Thursday. But, the Tigers' offense exploded in the final two innings for the 14-6 win.

Sioux Central girls down Poky by 1

PETERSON ― Matilyn Treirweiler came in to pitch in the middle of the second inning with the bases load and allowed minimal runs. She followed herself on base with a single to score Sioux Central’s first run of the game on Sioux Central’s way to downing Pocahontas-Area, Thursday night in Peterson.

In the fourth, Avery Wilson started a rally that allowed for three more runs to come across the inning in the Rebels 6-5 win.

Outdoors: Making a good troll

In today’s world, the word “troll” has several meanings. In folklore, a “troll” is an unpleasant creature. In the internet world, a “troll” is someone who intentionally tries to cause trouble on message boards by posting inflammatory messages. But in the world of fishing, “trolling” is a great way to present a bait to fish.

Urbandale ends Tigers’ state bid

URBANDALE — “Soccer is a cruel game sometimes,” Spencer coach Jesse Kuehler said. “It will give you everything, but it will also take everything from you in a second.”

The comments followed Spencer 2-0 loss to Urbandale in the first round of the IGHSAA State Tournament at UHS Frerichs Field, Monday night.

Tiger softball picks up road win

After a game at home against No. 7 Estherville Lincoln Central in a battle of unbeaten squads, Wednesday’s makeup game at Cherokee resulted in a 6-4 Tiger win at the Braves. Postponed from May 27, Spencer got on the board in the first with a pair of runs before allowing the struggling Braves three in the bottom half of the frame to take a one-run lead.

SPENCER — Eight runs in the bottom of the sixth ended a close 5-3 contest as the Tigers, despite having just four hits, invoked the 10-run rule, 13-3, Monday.
