Indians end Tiger team's season in 8

FORT DODGE — While Spencer’s team tennis season may have ended Wednesday at Fort Dodge, Tigers Kennedy Graettinger and Brynn Merchant will keep playing when they compete in doubles action after moving on from the individual tournament.

In a battle of Lakes Conference opponents, last year’s No. 3 state finisher and top 10-ranked Spencer, 16-5-1, fell to 17-8-0 Spirit Lake-Okoboji in eight games. The regional competition was held on the Fort Dodge courts.

Tiger ladies fall 1 meet shy of state

STORM LAKE — A great Spencer girls golf season came to an end Wednesday in Storm Lake among a crowded regional field of top teams led by MOC-Floyd Vallet. The Tigers finished fourth overall, shooting a round of 396 to end the year 44-5. The Lady Dutch led the field with a team score of 328, 34 strokes better than runner-up Sioux Center at the Buena Vista Golf Course at Lake Creek Country Club.

MOC-FV also swept the two medalist honors.

A date at state

ORANGE CITY — Spencer finished behind host MOC-Floyd Valley at the Class 3A Sectional Meet, Monday, played at Landsmeer Golf and Country Club in Orange City. The effort, in less than ideal conditions, earned the team a trip to the state tournament.

The Tigers finished 18 strokes back of the champion Dutchmen and just four strokes ahead of third place Webster City.

Sioux Central’s Loving ends season

GTRA/Spencer Bulls Eyes host home meet

The GTRA/Spencer Bulls Eyes hosted a three-day tournament shoot on the home range in Ruthven recently and the participating teams battled 30-40 mph winds with even stronger gusts, chilly temperatures, and some rain. The event featured 162 athletes from five other teams; Storm Lake Trapshooters, Pocahontas County Shooting Sports, Emmetsburg Hot Shots, Emmet County Clay Busters and Alta-Aurelia Warriors.

Tiger teams look for podium at state

SIOUX CENTER ― Both Spencer girls and boys qualified individuals and relay events for the state track and field meet at Drake University in Des Moines which gets underway later this week.

Tiger girls coach Drew Schiltz touted his team’s third place finish in tough circumstances in Sioux Center, Thursday.

“Despite a windy night that affected times across the state, our girls delivered an outstanding performance against some of the state's best competition,” he said.

Ready for Des Moines

GARNER ― Representation from Sioux Center earned a path at the District Meet in Garner, Thursday, last week. Multiple Rebel competitors will be the “Blue Oval,” starting Thursday, May 22.

“Mother nature made it difficult to qualify as an at best from our district, but our ladies still had a ton of success throughout the meet,” said Brent Tierweiler, Sioux Central girls coach. “I am proud of the effort that our girls gave tonight and look forward to the state meet next week.”

Loving advances: Rebel golfers compete in brutal regional conditions

AURELIA — A fourth place finish at regionals Saturday ended the Sioux Central girls golf season. Shooting a combined 430 — led by Alex Loving’s 103 — the Rebels were behind the mark of champion Newell-Fonda which shot a 407 as a squad, Host Alta-Aurelia was two strokes off the Mustang’s effort, for runner-up.

Loving, a senior, landed herself in the top six with 103 and advances to round two of regional play.

Finale win: Tigers top Stars on home turf Friday

SPENCER — Cayden Brewer scored twice and handed out an assist in No. 5 Spencer’s 4-1 victory over visiting Sioux City North, at home, Thursday night.

Tiger coach Jesse Kuehler, said he was “very, very happy with the performance. We wanted to go into postseason with some momentum and we did just that.”

SHS boys tennis season ends

SIOUX CITY — In winning the substate quarterfinal against Le Mars, 5-2, in Sioux City, Saturday morning at Morningside College, Spencer’s boys tennis program earned a berth in the substate semifinal against an unbeaten Sergeant Bluff-Luton later in the afternoon.

Neither wind nor rain can stop them

ALGONA — Despite the less than ideal conditions — and that’s an understatement — Spencer’s girls proved themselves 13 strokes better than Algona on the Bulldogs home course Thursday to close out the regular season schedule.

“It was a windy day at River Road Golf course in Algona, but the girls battled and played well for the conditions,” Spencer girls coach Nate Wendt said. “The scores do not necessarily indicate how well they played.”

SHS girls get win at home

SPENCER — Mason City came a knocking and the Spencer defense said, “You can’t come in” … to the Tiger goal. Friday night, the Tigers improved to 14-3 while handing the Riverhawks their sixth loss on their year, 7-0.

“Our Mason City game was one of our best performances of the season,” said John Hansel, Spencer girls coach. “From start to finish it was both our best defending and attacking we have had this year. That is exactly what you want heading into the postseason.”

SPENCER — After the singles match between No. 1’s, Abbey Crew, of Spencer, and Megan Laursen, of Estherville Lincoln Central, which proved very competitive, the Tigers cruised to four straight wins — ending the Class 1A, Region 1B contest early Friday. Spencer won five straight matches at home to stop the match, 5-0. The Tigers advanced to the next round in against Spirit Lake-Okoboji, Tuesday at 9 a.m., on the courts in Fort Dodge.

PBS to provide coverage of IGHSAU state soccer

JOHNSTON — Don't miss any of the girls state soccer action! As teams battle to earn their trip to the state tournament, Iowa PBS is preparing for live coverage of the championship matches. The statewide network’s commitment to girls high school sports coverage continues as teams from across the state take to the field for the 2025 IGHSAU Girls State Soccer Championships. Coverage of each class title match will take place Saturday, June 7, at Cyclone Sports Complex in Ames.

Outdoors: Handling unusual fishing conditions

Anglers can encounter unusual fishing conditions whenever they go fishing. These unusual conditions often make it hard to get the fish to bite. These conditions happen every year and often at predictable times, so in reality, they really aren’t that unusual. Maybe different is a better way to describe them. Nonetheless, there are times when the world around the fish changes, and if we want to catch some fish, we need to change our approach to fishing.
