Tigers down Wolfpack; Dominate Indians 16-1

The Tigers won their fifth and sixth straight games during the week. Spencer now sits at 17-6 on the season. Spencer was looking to clinch second place in the Lakes Conference, and they did just that, winning their fifth conference game, only behind Estherville Lincoln-Central, who finished at 7-1.

Rebels cruise to 10th straight win

The Sioux Central Rebels softball team has won 10 consecutive games and 15 of their last 16 contests. The team dominated three opponents to start their final week of the season, downing Alta-Aurelia 14-3. They proceeded to dominate South O’Brien 14-4 before shutting out Woodbury Central 10-0 for their 23rd win of the season.

Sioux Central split their games to begin the week. The Rebels currently sit at 9-12 and will prepare for postseason play beginning this Saturday. The team will travel to Okoboji High School in Milford to face off with the Emmetsburg E-Hawks at 5 p.m.

SPENCER — The whole state of Iowa was introduced to Spencer’s Addison Hoben during her sophomore season. She's still got two more years of playing high school soccer, and she just won the Des Moines Register All-Iowa Player of the Year award. Hoben led the entire state of Iowa with 64 goals and 151 points, helping lead the Tigers to the 2A state quarterfinal. She had 19 more goals than second-place Grace Gaarde of Regina Catholic, who found the back of the net 45 times this season.

3 girls represent Spencer at 2023 AAU Scholastic Duals

ORLANDO, Fla. — Three Spencer girls wrestlers traveled south to Orlando to compete in the 2023 AAU Scholastic Girls Wrestling Duals. Kaylee Nachtigal, Shaylee Sutherland and Kiara Ruiz showed wrestlers from all across the nation what to expect when you face a Spencer Tigers girls wrestler. The trio combined for a record of 25-3 in the tournament. All three of them earned All-American honors in the tournament.

Tigers dominate Le Mars, lose to Newell-Fonda

Spencer hosted Newell-Fonda and Le Mars in their annual Spencer Softball Tournament over the weekend. The girls dominated Le Mars, 10-0, before losing to the Mustangs, 11-0.

“I’m proud of the team so far this year as they have fought through a lot of injuries and changes this year,” head coach Tara Hauschen said. “I'll be excited for the next few games to see them continue to fight against good teams.”

Spencer loses close one to Humboldt

SPENCER — The Tigers hosted Humboldt on Thursday in Spencer, losing the lead late in the seventh inning, allowing the Wildcats to defeat Spencer 8-5. Humboldt plated two runs in the sixth inning, before adding four more in the seventh to steal the win. Spencer had the tying run at the plate in the bottom of the inning, but would be unsuccessful.

Tigers grab wins over Indians, Knights

Spencer picked up two huge victories to end the week against Pocahontas Area and Kuemper-Catholic. The Tigers held on to defeat both opponents for their fourth straight victory, and sixth win in their last seven games.

"I'm very pleased with how the team is finding ways to win," head coach Brian Dirkx said. "It isn't always pretty offensively or defensively, but the boys know how to compete. They simply refuse to give up when they are down."

 

RED HOT

Sioux Central has been blazing hot as of late, winning 12 of their last 13 games. The girls are currently sitting at 20-5, defeating Newell-Fonda, GTRA and Okoboji to end the week.

The Rebel offense was shut down in their two games to end the week. The team would combine for just three total hits in both losses. The team dropped its contests to Newell-Fonda and Le Mars Gehlen Catholic to fall to 8-10 on the season.

I didn’t enjoy putting a live frog on a hook and offering it to a hungry catfish. Outdoors: Weather model forecasts bump in Iowa pheasant population

Favorable winter and spring weather across much of Iowa is expected to benefit pheasant hunters this fall.

Todd Bogenschutz, upland wildlife research biologist with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, said each summer, the DNR uses a model based on winter and spring weather conditions, previous weather data and more than 50 years of pheasant roadside population surveys to predict pheasant population trends for the fall.
