LE MARS — Spencer owned the track Monday night in Le Mars, winning 12 of 19 events — including six relays — as they ran away from the competition Monday night at the Schilling Invitational.

“Thank God through Jesus Christ for another day of track and his endless blessings,” Tiger coach Wilson Hookfin said. “We won the meet.

SPENCER — Spirit Lake-Okoboji flexed its Lakes Conference tennis muscles Monday, taking a convincing 8-1 match on Spencer’s Riverview Courts.

“It was a tough meet tonight versus conference favorites SL-O,” Spencer boys tennis coach Joe Steele admitted.

He applauded the effort turned in by his largely youthful, and tired, squad.

SPENCER — A 5-0 score on the board greeted the Spencer Tiger boys Monday night as they shutout Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley at the Spencer Soccer Complex. The game’s final horn was a welcomed sound for the home team, offering a couple days rest from live action.

“We could tell early on fatigue was going to factor into the match after the many minutes played over the weekend,” Tiger coach Jesse Kuehler said, “but the boys played our game and got out with the result.

SPIRIT LAKE — AJ Stanley, Easton Beehler, Trevor Cooke and Tyler Storey treated Spirit Lake’s Brooks Golf Course like it was home Tuesday. Stanley medaled, Beehler finished runner-up — both with rounds of 38; while Cooke and Storey finished close behind with 39s for Spencer. The course mastery resulted in a 17-stroke road win, 154-171.

Marc Bruning, Tiger head coach acknowledged it was “another very solid outing by our guys.

SPIRIT LAKE — Tuesday night, a collection of seven teams — including both Sioux Central boys and girls, and the Spencer girls — traveled to Spirit Lake to compete in track and field action. In the ladies competition, the Rebels and Tigers battled for runner-up honors, with Sioux Central besting Spencer by six points, 123-117.

Spirit Lake would run away from the field in both boys and girls action. Brandon Goodchild’s Rebel boys placed fifth in the field with 57.

NEWELL — The Rebel boys golf team finished third in the pack of teams competing in a Twin Lakes Quadrangular Monday, finishing with 200 strokes to place ahead of West Bend-Mallard, but behind champion and host Newell-Fonda, and Pocahontas-Area/Pomeroy-Palmer.

“I was happy we improved our team score from last Thursday's meet,” said Chris Wildeman, the Sioux Central coach.

He added, “Still room to improve.”

SIOUX RAPIDS — "It was good to be at home tonight and play in a familiar atmosphere,” Sioux Central girls golf coach Jen Wittmaack said. “The girls showed improvement and we had several players shoot their personal bests.

Newell-Fonda, Pocahontas-Area/Pomeroy-Palmer and West Bend Mallard — all Twin Lakes Conference competitors with Sioux Rapids to play nine holes at the Little Sioux Golf & Country Club.

ESTHERVILLE — The Iowa Lakes Community College softball team went 1-1 on the day against Hawkeye Community College over the weekend. The Lakers lost the first game, 18-5, and won game two, 5-2. The Lakers are now 11-19 overall and 2-8 in conference play.

The GK Storm Gymnasts — based out of Storm Lake and including Spencer athletes — competed at the Iowa State Meet at the TBK Bank Sports Complex in Bettendorf, March 22-24. The four Spencer athletes include: (above) Maja Edmonds, Kahlie Genson, Caitlyn Barr and Adlee Erdman. (Below) The GK Storm Gymnastics team includes the Spencer gymnasts and others are from surrounding towns. Barr will be moving on to Regionals, April 19-21, at the Alliant Energy PowerHouse in Cedar Rapids.

FORT DODGE — Debuting on the road against Fort Dodge, Spencer’s girls claimed 10 of 11 matches, and 125 of 153 games played, for their first win of the young season, Thursday.

“A good start to our season,” said Bob Schlaeger, Tiger girls head.

“Saw some good things that we have been working on, also knocked some rust off,” he added. “As a team, we will build upon this win and try to peak towards the end of the season.”

The Tigers finished the week with a 2-2 mark in girls soccer action after falling to Heelan, the third-ranked team in 1A, Thursday evening; and heading to Council Bluffs for the Thomas Jefferson Invite where they finished 1-1 Saturday.

CHEROKEE — The Spencer girls hit the road Thursday, battling wind and a difficult nine-hole course to best Cherokee, the home team, 223-210, in Lakes Conference golf action.

“The girls battled hard,” said Nate Wendt, Spencer head coach. “The course is one of the most difficult that we play because of the hills and a few forced carry shots over water.

SPENCER — Sergeant Bluff-Luton and Fort Dodge traveled to Spencer Tuesday to face the Tigers at the Riverview Tennis Courts. The Warriors and Dodgers walked away with wins over the hosts, scoring 9-0 and 6-3 respectively on the road.

“Although we finished with two losses today,” Spencer coach Joe Steele said. “I’m not disappointed with the way we played. I thought we were improved tonight compared to Monday's win and I'm happy with the way our skills are trending.

MASON CITY — “It was a tough day all around on Saturday, starting with the wind,” Spencer boys tennis coach Joe Steele said. “With sustained winds in the 30 mph range and gusts even higher, we were playing in extremely difficult conditions in addition to extremely good opponents. At points Saturday afternoon, our focus became less about tennis and more about competing through adversity.”

The Tigers would fall to both Decorah and Waverly by 9-0 counts at the Mason City Tournament.

Sophomore Cayden Brewer carries the ball up the field for Spencer against Norwalk, Friday on the Warriors home field, earning the 2-1 win. Trailing Norwalk 1-0 at the half, goals by Iain MacRae and William Frehse would propel Spencer to the win. Romeo Alvarez would provide an assist. The Tigers would duplicate the winning score against Denison-Schleswig Saturday to improve to 3-0 on the season.
