SPENCER — It’s bee seven years since a horrific tragedy took place on Dec. 19, 2015. A late afternoon created shock waves throughout the Spencer community, the passing of 220-pound Spencer wrestler Austin Roberts on the mat.

Memorial tournament this weekend

SPENCER — Spencer boys and girls wrestling programs are gearing up for their big home tournament this season. The Spencer varsity girls will host the Austin Roberts Tournament Friday at 5 p.m. For the boys, the tournament starts Saturday at 10 a.m.

Rebels finish in 10th at Akron-Westfield

AKRON — Sioux Central hit the road Saturday to compete at Akron-Westfield Tournament. The Rebels would have three wrestlers place on the day. Kaben Morrow and Keagen Riley both finished in third place in their weight classes. Duane McGregor would grab fifth place.

Spencer crowns 3 champions at Emmetsburg

EMMETSBURG — Original plans for the Spencer boys wrestling team were to compete at the Saydel Tournament over the weekend. Due to snow at the end of the week, the team decided to wrestle at Emmetsburg. Three Tigers finished on top of their weight class, Kade Johnson, Gabe Cauthron and Logan Huckfelt. Spencer would also win the meet as a team with a score of 216.5

Tigers take 4th at Bobcat Invite

MARSHALLTOWN ― On Saturday, Spencer made the trip to compete in the Bobcat Invite at Marshalltown. A second place finish in the 2x100 freestyle relay for Reid Tigges and Aiden Seversen. The tandem put together a time of 1:49.48. This would be the best placing for Spencer on the day. The Tigers would finish in fourth place with a team score of 43, behind Marshalltown, Newton and Cedar Rapids Kennedy.

Rebels lose heartbreaker to Cougars

MANSON — Sioux Central took on conference rival Manson Northwest-Webster on Friday night. An 11-7 difference in fourth quarter scoring for the Cougars put them over the Rebels in a close one 41-40.

Rebels stay undefeated with 19-point win

MANSON — Sioux Central made its way to Manson on Friday to take on the Cougars in a Twin Lakes Conference matchup. The Rebels capitalized on a horrible second quarter from Manson, Sioux Central would outscore the Cougars 16-5 in the quarter, leading to a nine-point halftime lead. The boys would pull away from Manson and cruise to a 59-40 win to improve to 4-0 on the season.

Iowa Lakes falls to Des Moines Area

The Iowa Lakes Community College women's basketball team fell on the road Saturday at Des Moines Area Community College 66-68.

The Lakers were led by Brielle Bartelt with 17 points. Ihari Oromo added 12 points and Emma Kanz added 11 points for the Lakers.

Iowa Lakes is 7-6 on the season and 2-1 in conference play.

The Lakers return to play at home on Wednesday, Dec. 14, at 5:30 p.m. versus Northeast for their last game of the first semester.

Lakers knock off No. 8 DMACC

ESTHERVILLE — The Iowa Lakes Community College men's basketball team knocked off eighth ranked Des Moines Area Community College on Saturday 96-85 to move to 8-5 overall and 2-0 in Iowa Community College Athletic Conference play.

"Really proud of our guy's effort (Saturday night),” coach Troy Larson said. “We guarded together. Creighton and Isaiah really got us going making shots early and Anthony Holden did a great job making plays when we needed him too late."

Laker volleyball signs South Dakota setter Grimes

The Iowa Lakes Community College volleyball team is very happy to announce 5-foot-8 setter Jordan Grimes, from Kadoka Area High School in South Dakota, has signed a letter of intent to attend Iowa Lakes and play volleyball in the fall of 2023. Laker coach Mike Turnbull is excited to have Grimes joining the program.

5 Rebels take top spot at Eagle Grove

EAGLE GROVE — Sioux Central hit the road on Monday to compete in a round robin tournament at Eagle Grove. The Rebel girls wrestling team had a successful night, five girls were crowned champion of their weight class in the tournament. Nichole Hart went 3-0 to win the 115-pound class. Makala Zeka dominated the 120 class. Odola Cham, Jazzmin Deshazer and Hannah Illg Keith all took first place.

5 Tigers crowned champion at SBL Invite

SIOUX CITY — Spencer got their week going with a trip to Sioux City Monday. The girls competed in the Sergeant Bluff-Luton Girls Invitational. The Tigers were able to win five classes. Atalia Rosales, Kailee Spencer, Shaylee Sutherland, Laila Nielsen and Olivia Huckfelt.

All of this girls have been having stellar starts to the season.

Joshlynn Johnson was actually defeated by Rosales in the championship match. Kyiah Logan was also runner up in the 125 pound class.

Tigers' huge 3rd quarter results in win

SPENCER — The Spencer Tiger girls basketball team looked to continue its undefeated start to the young season against Emmetsburg Monday. Thanks to a dominant third quarter, Spencer picked up a 53-33 win over the E-Hawks.

Carroll wins battle of the Tigers over Spencer

SPENCER — The local YMCA was filled with boys swimming fans in the battle of the Tigers on Tuesday. Spencer and Carroll competed in the first home meet for the Tigers on the year. Carroll would defeat Spencer 99-70 in the meet.

Olson leads late rally, Tigers down E-Hawks

SPENCER — Emmetsburg’s boys basketball team made its way to Spencer Monday night for varsity basketball action with the Tigers. Both squads were looking for their first wins of this young season. Spencer would pull ahead late after a super close fourth quarter and grab the 56-51 win.

Rebel girls defeat Warriors 49-40

SIOUX RAPIDS — Alta-Aurelia made the trip to Sioux Rapids Monday to compete against the Rebels in girls hoops. A dominating fourth quarter performance on defense propelled Sioux Central to a 49-40 win over the Warriors.
