Spencer girls hoping to make regional splash

The Spencer girls swim squad will head to Mason City Saturday with the intention of punching tickets to the state meet the following weekend. Tiger Lily Gross has already earned her spot with a state qualifying effort earlier this season. The Tigers last swim meet was Oct. 17.

Tigerettes master solo contest

The Spencer Tigerettes dance team brought six soloists to compete in Class 8 Solos at Newton High School on Saturday, Oct. 28. Faith Klatt, Jill Moser, Aubrey Larson, Isabelle Young, Peyton Kelley and Zarah Zahrt all received a Division 1 rating scoring between 80-100 points.

"We had a great day Saturday,” coach Kaylene Mortensen said. “The girls had some of their strongest performances yet and improved in not only their skills but overall showmanship."

 

Lakers fall in home opener

The Iowa Lakes women's basketball team fell in their home opener to Briar Cliff JV 67-71. The Lakers were led by Emma Kanz with 18 points and Arriana Smith with 15 points.Iowa Lake s is 0-1 on the season and host Dordt JV on Tuesday, Nov. 7, at 5:30 p.m.

Laker men begin season Friday

ESTHERVILLE — Jason McKinney, head men’s basketball coach at Iowa Lakes Community College, announced and released the team's 2023-24 schedule. This year’s slate features 30 contests, including 14 at Laker gymnasium in Estherville. The Lakers will also play three multiteam classics throughout the first month of the season.

Spencer, Sioux Central runners tested at state

Peyton Morey’s 28th place finish in the Class 3A Girls State Cross-Country field was highlighted by

a season’s best time of 19:47.2.

Likewise, in the boy’s race, fellow Tiger Nathan McCusker produced a personal best effort of 17:04.6 for 55th overall.

11 Tigers earn All-District honors

Eleven Spencer Tiger football players earned positions on the recently released Class 4A District 1 All-District List; and junior Miles Robbins was recognized as the district’s defensive lineman-of-the-year.

Iowa Lakes fall in Region 11 title game

Iowa Lakes 3-2 halftime advantage wasn’t enough for the Lakers as they surrendered four second half goals while going scoreless against top-seeded Northeast on the road in the Region 11 Championship Game Sunday.

My friend said that I could if I wanted to, but we probably wouldn’t need them. Since minnows had always been a big part of my walleye chasing, and since I resist change, I picked up a couple dozen minnows.

Outdoors: Taking a look at the ’23 pheasant opener

Well, the 2023 Iowa pheasant opener is in the books. With temps in the upper 20s on Saturday morning, it was quite a difference from the heat of the 2022 pheasant opener. Yes, it was cold, but after walking for a while and with the blood flowing, it wasn’t bad at all. Across northwest Iowa, however, late Saturday afternoon brought the first snowfall of the year. Anywhere from 1-4 inches fell and left anywhere from a dusting to several inches in the CRP and public hunting areas.

Lakers grab second win at SWCC

CRESTON — Iowa Lakes volleyball squad traveled to Creston to take on Southwestern and Highland, both of Kansas. They beat SWCC in four sets, and lost to Highland in three.

No. 2 Lakers advance to ICCAC championship

The No. 2 nationally-ranked Iowa Lakes mens soccer team hosted Marshalltown, Wednesday, in the semifinal round of ICCAC playoffs, winning 1-0. The first half saw a tightly contested battle, with the Lakers creating several quality chances, but failing to find the back of the net.

Virgo named Athlete of the Week

To close out the regular season, Philmour Virgo scored a goal in a 6-1 victory for the Lakers over Western Iowa Tech. The goal contributions didn't stop there, as in Iowa Lakes first match of Region 11 Tournament play, he scored another and provided the assist on another.

Lakers 5-game run ends with postseason loss

NORFOLK, Neb. — Iowa Lakes women’s five-game win streak ended Tuesday in Norfolk, Nebraska, against No. 5 ranked Northeast Community College in the Region 11 Tournament Semifinals.

Maria Vilhena would score on an assist from Laker teammate Faith Martin to give ILCC an early 1-0 advantage, but Northeast would add a pair of goals to lead 2-1 at the break. Neither team would alter the score in the second half.
