Rebels claim shootout at Eagle Grove

EAGLE GROVE — Sioux Central survived a back-and-forth first half battle against winless Eagle Grove on the road Friday night to open the district season with a 44-26 victory. Leading just 16-14 at the the half — a difference determined by a failed Eagles two-point conversion attempt — Sioux Central would produce four unanswered second scores after falling behind 20-16 in the third quarter.

Miller competes for Beavers at home invite

STORM LAKE — Former Spencer Tiger and current Buena Vista University freshman golfer Kaden Miller shot a 77 in round one of his home invitational over the weekend. This is Miller’s third appearance of the season on the Beaver’s varsity squad. He would finish with a 155, shooting 78 Sunday to helping BVU to a third place finish among 10 teams. (Photo submitted)

No. 10 ICCC keep Lakers winless in conference

ESTHERVILLE — Iowa Lakes hosted No. 10 in the nation Iowa Central Wednesday. The first set was tight all the way till about the 18-point mark. The Tritons never looked back and after starting the second set on an eight point run, kept control all night.

Iowa Lakes downs No. 9 Southeastern

Iowa Lakes men's soccer hosted No. 9 Southeastern, Saturday, opening conference play with a 7-3 victory.

The scoring started in the third minute, where some good combination play amongst the Lakers isolated Francis Motsi on the right flank. He got the better of his defender and set up Gabriel Miranda for the strike on goal.

Tiger girls down Rebels in 3

Spencer needed just three games to even its season record at 6-6 with a convincing win over winless Sioux Central on Tiger home court Tuesday night. The final score was 25-16, 25-20 and 25-9.

“The girls did a great job finding a way to win in three games last night, we served great as well as played some really scrappy defense,” said Tara Hauschen, Spencer head coach.

Munson, Koppie, McCusker lead Spencer

STORM LAKE — Van Munson’s sixth place time of 17:07.07, coupled with top 20 teammates Rylei Koppie and Nolan McCusker, helped Spencer’s boys to a third place effort among a field of 10-plus teams at Tornado Invitational Tuesday at the Storm Lake Golf Course.

A pair of top 10 individual finishes by Spencer Tiger runners Peyton Morey and Adalyn Schoelerman propelled the team to a sixth place finish at the Storm Lake meet.

Laker women earn first win

ROCHESTER, Minn. — Iowa Lakes volleyball team travelled to Rochester, Minnesota, last weekend where the squad faced Harper College, Rochester Community and Technical College, Southwestern Community College and North Iowa Area Community College.

2 Laker soccer players named Athletes of the Week

ESTHERVILLE — Iowa Lakes athletics has two men’s soccer players named ICCAC Athletes of the Week, Matheus Loreto, a sophomore defenseman, and Yuta Hirano, freshman.

Indians too much for Tigers

SPIRIT LAKE — After Spirit Lake built a 28-6 halftime lead, the visiting Spencer Tigers sparked a rally to close the game to 35-21 in the third quarter, miscues and big plays by the No. 6 Indians stole the momentum back from their guests. Spirit Lake would add two more score for a cushion in the final six minutes of play in the 48-21 win.

Eagles get 27 unanswered, down SC

LAWTON — After taking a 7-6 lead in the second quarter, Sioux Central would surrender 27 unanswered points to Lawton-Bronson, resulting in a 33-7 Rebel loss to the Eagles on the road Friday night to close out nondistrict play.

Rebel runners place 3 boys, girls in top 20

HOLSTEIN — In spite of injures, illness and missing runners both Sioux Central’s girls and boys placed in the top half of the field, and both squads top three finishers were among the top 20 at Ridge View’s meet at the Holstein Golf Course, Saturday. Overall, the girls placed third and the boys fifth among the 12 squads competing.

Rebel coach Kelsey Smith was proud of both of her units’ efforts amid adverse conditions and tough runners.

Lakers fall to Hawkeye in straight sets

WATERLOO — The Iowa Lakes volleyball team travelled to Waterloo to take on the Hawkeye Redtails. A very talented Hawkeye lineup put the pressure on the Lakers and ILCC struggled with being efficient in both serve, pass and attack. The cost — many points to stay in the match.

In the second set, the Lakers cleaned up play and kept the score tighter.

Iowa Lakes softball announces camp dates

ESTHERVILLE — The Iowa Lakes softball program announced its 2023-24 softball camp schedule. This year's schedule includes a Softball Academy, a Youth Camp and an Elite Camp with opportunities for athletes in kindergarten through 12th grade.

Iowa Lakes shooting drops opener to Iowa Western

CYLINDER — Wednesday, the Iowa Lakes Lakers opened the 2023 fall season with a 500 target trap match in the ICCAC League versus Iowa Western at Sportsmen’s Gun Club near Cylinder. Iowa Western broke 478x500 to 446x500 for Iowa Lakes. The top five shooters for Iowa Lakes were: Brady Abkes 92, Camoran Fick 92, Wyatt Schwenker 90, Kendall Umscheid 87 and Mackenzie Schnetzer 85.
