Outdoors: Low flows and high temperatures delay stocking in select trout streams

Several catchable trout stockings on a few trout streams in northeast Iowa will be delayed until this week, the week of Sept. 11, due to low flows and high temperatures.

The select streams include Buck Creek, South Cedar, Otter Creek, West Canoe (Winneshiek County), Bear Creek (Fayette County), Brush Creek (Jackson County) and Dalton Pond (Jackson County). These streams are usually not stocked in July and August and resume in September due to stream water temperature concerns.

Saturday, Aug. 12, was a big day for a lot of walleye anglers as they attended the Chase Parsons Fishing Seminar at the Okoboji Blue Water Festival. Parsons, who has been a highly successful professional walleye angler for the past 20 years and owner of the Next Bite TV program airing on the Discovery Channel, right away told a packed crowd, “I want to talk about techniques that we can use from one body of water to another.”

Walleyes are perhaps the most popular fish to catch in the Midwest and they’re gaining in popularity in other areas also. On the table, walleye is hard to beat. And although some say a walleye’s fight is sluggish, when appropriate gear is used, marble-eyed fish represent themselves well. They may not jump like a smallmouth bass, but the headshake and boatside thrashing will please most anglers.

Outdoors: Results of 2023 August Roadside Count

The 2023 August Roadside Count data is out, and pheasant hunters across the Hawkeye State received excellent news relating to this year’s pheasant season. The statewide survey showed the highest statewide counts since 2015. The survey is conducted by Iowa DNR staff between Aug. 1-15, as they drive 218, 30-mile routes on gravel roads at dawn on mornings with heavy dew.

Spencer Tigers at Spirit Lake Indians

7 p.m. — Friday, Spirit Lake

After a week of tracking Webster City’s Jaxon Cherry who ran for more than 300 yards and five touchdowns, Spencer, seeking its first win against a multifaceted and top 10-ranked Spirit Lake team on the road. In their first two games, the Indians have completed 26 passes for just under 350 yards, while adding 170 on the turf.

Spencer runners both run 6th at Le Mars

BRUNSVILLE — Spencer took its coed cross-country program on the road to Le Mars, Wednesday, competing against a 13-team field at Prairie Rose Golf Course at Brunsville. Both units earned finishes in the top half of the field, each placing sixth propelled by medalist finishes from Peyton Morey, Addalyn Schoelerman and Rylei Koppie.

REBEL GIRLS TOP FIELD

Sioux Central cross-country had another definitive night Tuesday, competing against a strong field on the grueling Estherville Golf Course. The varsity girls came away with the team win, finishing six points better than runner-up Algona, and medaling four of its five scoring athletes. In the boys competition, the Rebels placed three runners in the top 10, but, despite the placements, finished third as squad against the talented competition.

Loreto doubles up on NIACC

MASON CITY — The Iowa Lakes Lakers men's soccer team started out hot on the road in Mason City Wednesday where they defeated NIACC, 3-1, in the first of teams two meetings in the 2023 season.

Laker Philmour Virgo found Lander Gonzalez on a square pass across the 6-yard box for the first goal of the game, before the Titans equalized things one minute into the second half.

Friday, Spencer fell to 0-2 in nondistrict play, dropping a 34-7 matchup with Webster City in the Tiger home opener at Dale Norton Field.

Cherry, one of the state’s top backfield talents proved nearly unstoppable, amassing all five of the team’s touchdowns and more than 300 yards in Webster City’s dominant ground attack.

Tiger netters split 6 at SCC

The Spencer Tiger volleyball squad played six matches at the South Central Calhoun Early Bird Tournament Saturday, finishing the day three-and-three.

Tara Hauschen, the Tigers volleyball coach, said they played “some great games against some tough teams.”

Spencer finished the day with a big win against Pocahontas to salvage the even split for the tournament. The purple and gold also scored wins against Manson-Northwest Webster and Perry.

Swimmers best Mason City in home opener

A one-two finish in the final relay event of the evening on Thursday in Spencer propelled the Tiger girls swim team to a victory over Mason City, 87-82, at the Spencer Family YMCA.

The 400-yard freestyle relay teams of Brooklyn Ferguson, Emma Storms, Lily Gross and Emily Quanbeck; and Abby O’Clair, Kamdyn Van Gelder, Autumn Wunschel and Ryonna Faulkender led Spencer to a come-from-behind win.

Rebels have no answer for Braves

SIOUX RAPIDS — Sioux Central’s attempt to start its 2023 with a 2-0 start was foiled by visiting Cherokee Friday night. The potent Brave ground ran for than 400 yards and turned a 7-0 first quarter lead into a 37-0 advantage by halftime. A pair of scores in the final periods would result in a 50-0 shutout victory for the guests.

Sioux Central runners earn top 3 placements

Sioux Central debuted its 2023 coed cross-country programs on a big stage in Okoboji on Thursday, making it known they will be a force to contend with on area courses this year, finishing near the top of the talented competition.

“I am very happy with how the first meet of the season went,” said Kelsey Miller, Sioux Central girls and boys cross-country coach. “We gave a very solid performance across the board.”

The good news for Iowa’s cottontail rabbit hunters is that Iowa has an abundant rabbit population, with the south-central part of the state seeing the best overall numbers. The better news for hunters is Iowa’s cottontail rabbit season begins Sept. 2 statewide.

The passage of Labor Day weekend suggests to many people that the end of summer is near, and to some anglers, that means it’s time to put the boat and other fishing equipment into storage. Anglers who quit fishing when summer exits are missing out on what some say is the best fishing of the year.
