‘Soaring like eagles for 25 years’

A weekend celebration commemorating Iowa Great Lakes Lutheran School’s 25th anniversary of providing education to area students will begin Friday and continue through Sunday. Activities include an evening meal, entertainment, breakfast, 5K run, family carnival as well as a celebration service and reception.

Collision sends 2 teens to hospital

MILFORD — Area emergency responders assisted at the scene of an early morning accident near Milford, Sunday, April 7, resulted in three injuries to a passenger and two teens. The teenagers were transported to a nearby hospital by ambulance.

Just before 1 a.m., the Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office received a call in reference to an accident involving two vehicles at the intersection of U.S. Highway 71 and 260th Street.

Sirens sound, skies darken, clouds rotate

Tuesday afternoon, after a tornado watch had been issued for Clay County, the skies over Spencer and northern Clay County darkened and the watch quickly became a warning. The sirens sounded for the first time this spring and cars moved up and down the streets a bit quicker. Despite some subtle rotation above, nothing touched down locally from the ominous skies. Council approves plan to buy new fire trucks

The Spencer City Council, on April 15, approved the purchase of two new trucks for the city fire department at a cost of roughly $2.7 million.

Council accepts land swap for 24th Street expansion

On April 15, following a brief, commentless public hearing, the City Council voted to approve a land swap between the city and property owners Larry and Ieileen Steffes.

The properties included in the swap are located along U.S. Highway 71 north of Schoneman’s Lumber. The parcel owned by the Steffes was a relatively narrow strip of land running west from Highway 71 to Fourth Avenue West on the northern border of a vacant city-owned property.

City Council: Splash pad and campground engineering should proceed

The April 15 City Council meeting also saw the council approve an agreement with Des Moines-based engineering firm Bolton & Menk to move forward with designs for a proposed splash pad, aquatic center upgrade and new campground.

Spencer to spend $20.8 million next year

The Spencer City Council, on April 15, unanimously adopted a city budget that includes more than $20.8 million in expenditures for fiscal year 2025, which begins July 1.

Several Tigers get day off

SPIRIT LAKE — Despite three top finishes in relay events, and a first-third effort in the 400-meter dash by Tate VonEhwegen and Dalton Flikkema, Spencer wound up in fourth place among a powerhouse field at the Sheryl Maahs Co-ed Track & Field Meet in Spirit Lake Monday. The event, originally scheduled for Tuesday, was moved ahead a day with severe weather predicted.

Youngsters celebrate spring with song

Trinity preschoolers filled their annual spring concert with songs on counting flowers, happiness and Jesus’ love. More than 200 parents, grandparents and friends ushered into Trinity Church and Preschool on April 10 to enjoy the music. (Photos submitted)

Spencer Community School Foundation 2024 Scholarship Recipients

This year, the Spencer Community Schools Foundation awarded scholarships to 79 seniors on Sunday, March 17, at the Clay County Regional Events Center. These awards are available through benefactors, as well as annual contributions from those choosing to support students, the school and the community.

A column of black and white smoke rose into the sky on Sunday, betraying the firestorm engulfing a small patch of restored prairie a few miles northwest of Silver Lake in southeast Clay County.

Fostoria residents face multiple felony drug charges after March 19 arrest

A Fostoria man was due to be arraigned Monday on multiple drug charges involving methamphetamine and marijuana.

Lucas Gene Richardson, 41, was arrested on March 19 after police say he attempted to sell 28 grams of methamphetamine and was found to have baggies, a scale, five marijuana plants and guns in his home in Fostoria.

New Clay County VA director to start May 28

Clay County has hired a new director for the county Veterans Affairs office.

On April 2, the county board of Supervisors approved the hire of Katie Ginger who will take over the VA office on May 28. Ginger was the best of 10 total candidates who submitted applications for the job being vacated by the retiring Darla Sheasley.
