Avera Health announces board appointments

Avera Health announces appointments to its board of directors for its new fiscal year which began July 1.

Luis Rojas, MD, has been named new board chair. His two-year term runs through June 30, 2024, and he has served on the board since 2018.

Boys Town Bash

Every year, the children and family nonprofit Boys Town offers its youth a brief summer vacation at Camp Okoboji, during which families have the chance to attend the organization’s annual Blue Water Bash. Boys Town’s 11th annual summer fundraiser will be Saturday on the Okoboji campgrounds at 6 p.m., and for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic, Boys Town youth will be able to attend.

Fair offers new learning opportunity for FFA chapters

FFA chapters from Iowa, South Dakota, Minnesota and Nebraska will have the opportunity to participate in a day of leadership opportunities and a college fair at the first-ever FFA Day on Tuesday, Sept. 13, at the 2022 Clay County Fair, powered by SMU.

Sponsored by Summit Carbon Solutions, FFA Day will feature three specific activities, all free — including gate admission — for the FFA chapter members and their advisors:

Supervisors consider drainage district utility crossing agreement

In response to proposed carbon pipelines from Summit Carbon Solutions and Navigator Heartland Greenway which would cross through Clay County, engineering service ISG is developing a drainage district utility crossing agreement for the county. Spencer Pech, graduate engineer from ISG spoke to the Clay County Board of Supervisors about a utility crossing agreement for the county.

School board approves Classroom Clinic agreement for second year

The Spencer School Board approved a services agreement with Classroom Clinic, a program which provides rural school districts with timely and convenient access to children’s mental health services, for 2022-23 school year.

Summer Reading Program closes with splash

Clay County Auditor and Commissioner of Elections Ann Baschke announced pursuant to a federal court order, the filing period for candidates for nonparty political organizations and nonaffiliated persons for the upcoming general election, Nov. 8, has changed.

Sacred Heart and volunteers clean up Oneota playscape

Approximately 30 kids from Spencer’s Sacred Heart Summer Care and other young volunteers enjoyed an outdoors volunteering experience as they helped clean up the Oneota playscape on Tuesday.

Northwest Bank raises donations for Clay County Relay for Life

Northwest Bank held a community shred day on June 10 at its bank location in Spencer. The event allowed community members to dispose of confidential paperwork easily and securely. Overall, the event raised $749 by collecting freewill donations.

I've been thinking a lot about the words of two U.S. senators.

One is Iowa's own U.S. Sen. Joni Ernst, who recently visited the country's southern border to see first-hand how the country monitors said border and — ideally — prevents people from illegally entering the United States.

Students attended SkillsUSA Conference

EMMETSBURG — Caleb Robinson and Jacob Tuttle, two Iowa Lakes Community College students, attended the 58th annual SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference held in Atlanta, Georgia, from June 20-24. The yearly national conference showcased state contest winners competing in their respective career, technical and leadership divisions.

Online and distance learning featured at ILCC board meeting

ALGONA — The Iowa Lakes Community College board of trustees met Tuesday afternoon for their regularly scheduled board meeting on the Algona campus.

Robert Leifeld, vice president of administration, began Tuesday’s meeting by introducing Theresa Waechter, Algona campus supervisor. Wachter provided a campus update and shared her excitement for the upcoming school year.

Council tours waste treatment plant, landfill

A unique Committee of the Whole meeting took place Monday night as Spencer’s City Council were given a bus tour of some of the city’s public works facilities.

The first stop was at the city’s waste treatment plant, where the council was given an update on the facility’s current operations and keeping future economic development in mind as the city’s sewer system is considered.

Summer Sizzler III attracts top state Democrats

The Dickinson County Democrats “Summer Sizzler III” will be held Wednesday, Aug. 24, at the Dickinson County Expo Center in Spirit Lake. Doors Open at 5 p.m., dinner from 6-7 p.m., and the evening program begins at 7 p.m.
