Mainstreet Market opens on courthouse square

Local food and produce vendors were joined by area artisans and grilling foods for the first of five scheduled Mainstreet Market Thursdays on the lawn of the Clay County Courthouse square. Popular regional band She’s With Us helped kicked off the summer celebration, drawing a crowd for the live concert at the foot of the courthouse steps. Next week, another popular group, Itty Bitty Boji Band will perform. Mainstreet Market events open to the public at 5 p.m. each Thursday through Aug.

Crop experts optimistic despite slight planting delay

“Despite the challenges we have seen this year I still think that the future of the agricultural economy is bright,” said Chuck White, who founded Agriland Farm Management & Realty and farms locally. “However sometimes it feels like riding a bucking bronco. As a farmer you've got no choice but to just saddle up and enjoy the ride.”

Dreier hired as Work Based Learning assistant

The Spencer Community School District and Spencer Chamber of Commerce announced the hiring of Alex Dreier as the Work Based Learning assistant.

Dreier has worked in education the last 10 years as an English teacher and administrator, most recently for the Waukee School District. He is excited to bridge Spencer Community Schools Work Based Learning Program with Chamber businesses.

City shuts down West 18th trailer park

Upon confirming dangerous conditions continue to exist in the trailer park at West 18th Street and Fourth Avenue West, the city of Spencer followed through on its plans to shut off the park's power at approximately 10 a.m. on Tuesday. The city officials had granted a week extension from the previously announced July 5 to allow residents more time to vacate and find other housing.

Community members share thoughts on urban chickens

Spencer residents shared differing opinions about allowing chickens within city limits during a public hearing at Wednesday’s Planning and Zoning meeting. After hearing from community members, the commission decided to recommend the ordinance after working on it for several months.

Patrons share stories at library book swap

Book lovers came together to have a night dedicated to their love of books at the Spencer Public Library's Book Swap Party on Monday. Finance Committee recommends floodplain study

The city of Spencer is hoping to shrink the floodplain affecting the Green Industrial area, and may soon commit to a study on shrinking the amount of water. Spencer’s Finance Committee discussed a proposal from Snyder & Associates to do a study on the floodplain and finding ways to shrink it.

Hartley Family Care planning Aug. 17 opening

HARTLEY — Hartley Family Care of Spencer Hospital will begin offering patient services on Wednesday, Aug. 17. The family medicine clinic will be open four days each week — Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday — from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The clinic is located at the Community Memorial Health Center facility in Hartley.

Jamie Billings, advanced registered nurse practitioner, will serve as the clinic’s primary health care provider.

County supervisors discuss changes to transfer station

Starting Aug. 1, unincorporated residents of Clay County will be required to provide their signature at the transfer station to drop off their household waste. The Clay County Board of Supervisors discussed the change during their meeting on Tuesday, emphasizing it will be the only change for those residents at the transfer station.

County supervisors receive update on bike trail project

An update on the construction of connecting Dickinson and Clay County for the Iowa Great Lakes Trail was given to the Clay County Board of Supervisors during their meeting on Tuesday. Ted Kourousis, executive director of Northwest Iowa Planning and Development, spoke to the board about the trail crossing through Pioneer Park in Dickinson County, and the pushback to their plan of crossing U.S. Highway 71.

'Rapunzel' final show at Treasure Village Theatre

MILFORD — It’s the final curtain call at Treasure Village Theatre as the theater will be performing its last show after 50 seasons of positive family entertainment. The site will continue to operate the mini golf and host flea markets.

The original musical “Rapunzel” will perform Wednesday through Saturday at 10 a.m., July 20-23 and 27-30.

OST to debut ‘Purely Patsy Cline’ July 19

OKOBOJI — Enjoy an intimate look into a beloved country-western star’s life, loves, and career as Okoboji Summer Theatre presents the musical tribute Purely Patsy Cline. The show will run from Tuesday, July 19, through Sunday, July 24.
