Applications being accepted for 2024 CCF Queen Contest

The search is underway for candidates to compete for the title of the 2024 Clay County Fair Queen. The winner, to be crowned Sunday, April 28, will reign over this year’s Clay County Fair and will also compete for the Iowa State Fair Queen title.

Outpouring of support

Friday was a record setting day at Papa Murphy’s. Normally the south Spencer retail take-and-bake pizza operation would do anywhere from 80 to 100 pizzas on the day leading into the weekend. This past Friday, the local franchise owner and operator Mandy Schatz said sales tickets began piling up at 6:30 a.m. that morning, resulting in approximately 450 pizzas ordered and constructed by store staff by end of the business day.

Legislators address education bills; AEA specialist per diem

In her opening statement during Saturday’s Eggs & Issues session, Rep. Megan Jones, R-Sioux Rapids, addressed the hot state education topics — SAA and AEA.

Jones, the Iowa House District 6 representative, noted many bills less controversial bills — approximately 50 — moved off the floor this past week, admitting “the AEA bill has kind of sucked up the space” which would have been utilized to further address other items.

School board sets tax levy hearing, gets update on deferred maintenance

During its regular meeting on Feb. 27, the Spencer School Board accepted a proposal to raise the district’s property tax levy for the next fiscal year by about 18 cents per $1,000 valuation.
The board also set a preliminary public meeting to discuss its proposed tax levy for the next fiscal year, April 3, 2024. Under the district’s proposed levy, its property tax rate would rise to $12.15 per $1,000 of valuation from $11.97.

Rotary to begin collecting books next Friday

Spencer Rotary will start accepting books March 8 and will continue the second Friday of each month in the parking lot outside Spencer Municipal Utilities from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., weather permitting. Adkins joins CCF lineup

Country superstar Trace Adkins with special guest, Eli Alger and the Faster Horses, will take the Grandstand stage at the 2024 Clay County Fair at 7:30 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 8. CCF, powered by SMU, made the SRG Concert Series announcement Thursday.

Feenstra successfully files for reelection to US House

HULL — Wednesday, Rep. Randy Feenstra, R-Hull, successfully filed for reelection to represent Iowa’s 4th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives. Feenstra submitted 224% of the minimum signature requirement.

Y Tigersharks ready for state meet

Sacred Heart Science Fair winners announced

Sacred Heart Catholic Elementary School recognized its 2024 Science Fair honorees. The top three place winners will have the opportunity to attend the state science fair in Ames, April 4-5. Addison Raveling was named the overall winner, with Dashel Van Oort finishing second and Gavin Jones placing third. Iowa high school students invited to week of innovation

Registration is now open for Business Horizons 2024, a five-day innovation program for Iowa high school students currently in grades 9-12. Business Horizons will take place July 14-18 on the campus of Drake University in Des Moines. This is the 41st year of the program provided by the Iowa Association of Business and Industry Foundation.

3 area FFA programs honored
