Library patrons befriend several raptors

Spencer residents of all ages came face to face with several different raptors at the Spencer Public Library Monday afternoon. Courtesy of the SOAR Raptor Center — an organization dedicated to saving avian resources — library patrons were able to see three different birds of prey up close and personal. Once acquainted with a screech owl, a peregrine falcon and a red-tailed hawk, the patrons learned about the different traits and habits distinguishing each species of raptor.

Tiger marching band finishes season with high honors

Spencer High School’s Tiger marching band was recently rewarded for their hard work and efforts this season as they received a Division I rating for their performance at the IHSMA State Marching Band Contest, which was held on Saturday, Oct. 8, in Sheldon.

City officials, organizations look toward economic development

Several community members came to Spencer City Hall Thursday evening to hear a presentation from Spencer’s Long Term Planning Committee on city development. The committee invited heads of local business networks to share recent and upcoming growth in the city, and demonstrated areas for future economic development.

Library to reveal updated Spanish collection

Spencer Public Library received a grant from the Clay County Community Foundation to update their Spanish Collection. While talking to members of the Spanish community about books they would like to see the library purchase, two members stepped forward and offered to help the Children’s Librarian with Spanish Storytime.

Raising awareness for breast cancer

In conjunction with Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Hope Haven will be having its second annual cancer walk on Friday, Oct. 21. Hope Haven employee Patti Mohr said the group plans to meet at the parking lot behind Pizza Ranch on Grand Avenue between 11:45 a.m. and 12:15 p.m. and plans to march to East Leach Park.

October just seems the best time to do it, because it’s not too hot, it’s not hopefully too cold.

Outdoors: Check docks and equipment for invasive species before storing for the winter

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources reminds lake property owners to check their boat and trailers, and docks and lifts, for aquatic invasive species before storing them for the winter.

Outdoors: Fall community trout stocking starts Oct. 19

Eighteen lakes across Iowa are gearing up to receive trout this fall. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources will release between 1,000 to 2,000 rainbow trout at each location as part of its cool weather trout program that brings trout to areas that cannot support them during the summer months.

Third parties charging for military records

The Iowa County Recorders Association wants to make all veterans aware that recording or requesting military records is always free of charge for a veteran. In recent weeks it has been reported that a third-party company has been charging veterans to record these documents. Please review the Iowa Code chapter and information regarding submitting copies of DD214 documents below.

Learning about modern day slavery

Spencer Sacred Heart Parish had a full house Tuesday night as many community members turned out for a lecture on human trafficking from Sister Shirley Fineran. Longtime advocate as well as founder and president of Lila Mae’s House, a residential home for women survivors of human trafficking in Sioux City, Fineran provided insight to the trauma victims of human trafficking endure in all parts of the world.

‘Young Frankenstein’ enters final weekend at SCT

Rohan Fund quilt tickets available at Fall Craft Show

Begining at this week’s Fall Craft Show at the Southpark Mall, tickets for the Michael Rohan Memorial Fund quilt will be sold with plans to announce the quilt winner in early December according to Neila Rohan, of Everly.

The Michael Rohan Memorial Fund works with the Spencer YMCA and provides the kindergarten and first graders in the Clay County schools with an introduction to swimming and lifesaving skills their last week of school each year for the last nine years.

City welcomes new parks director

After being hired as Parks and Recreation director last month, Bob Fullhart attended his first Park Board meeting on Tuesday. Already a local resident for over two decades, Fullhart is familiar with the area.

“I’ve been around Spencer for a lot of years,” Fullhart said. “I came in in 2000, spent the last 22 years working out at Del’s Garden Center, learning under them, growing up through the business and learning all sides of it.”

S.O.A.R. Raptor Center at Spencer library

The Spencer Public Library is excited to have a few visiting birds. The S.O.A.R. Raptor Center will be at the library at 2 p.m., Oct. 17. They will bring two to three raptors with them and talk about the uniqueness of the birds. Raptors are birds of prey that actively hunt, and feed on, other vertebrates. They included owls, eagles, falcons, kestrels, hawks and many more.
