Peterson man charged with domestic assault

Aggravated misdemeanor domestic assault (impede air or blood flow) and serious misdemeanor assault with bodily injury charges were filed against Robert Petersen, 43, of Peterson, at 12:30 a.m., on Monday, Aug. 7, in Sutherland.

Disc golf moves to Aquatic Center

Spencer’s disc golf course at West Leach Park is going to have a new home at the Spencer Aquatic Center. The process of moving the course to its new location is already underway, Parks and Recreation Director Bob Fullhart informed the Spencer Park Board on Tuesday.

'Gridshock’ offers look at Iowa-based sex-trafficking victims, perps

Just a little over a month since the movie “Sound of Freedom” was released in theaters, Spencer community members had the opportunity to watch a showing of “Gridshock,” an Iowa-made documentary that addresses sex trafficking in the state.

Livestock entry deadline approaching quickly for fair

The open class livestock entry deadline is rapidly approaching for the 2023 Clay County Fair, powered by SMU, Sept. 9-17.

All entries for open class beef cattle, dairy cattle, swine, sheep, rabbits and horses are due by midnight on Monday, Aug. 21.

Everly Community Days to be highlighted by The Remedy concert

In conjunction with the Everly Community Days celebration, the annual Fire & Rescue Street Dance will conclude the Saturday activities. The Remedy, a classic rock and country band, will perform beginning at 8 p.m. in front of The Ranch from until midnight. Cost of the dance will be $10 per person. The proceeds of the dance will go to help Everly Fire & Rescue with the purchase of equipment and provide training for the squad.

Kwik Star will come to Spencer next year

A Kwik Star convenience store will be on its way to the city of Spencer next year. Preliminary and final plats for the store and a development contract with the company were approved by the Spencer City Council on Monday.

“I think it’s been a long time coming here,” said Kacie Bonjour, real estate manager for Kwik Trip Incorporated. “We’ve had multiple meetings and conversations with city staff (about it), and they’ve been great to work with.”

CASSA prepping for ‘Grand’ move

Stephanie Henrich, executive director of Centers Against Abuse and Sexual Assault, stands in front of the new Spencer location on South Ground with a perspective relocation date sometime in September. The new primary training, business and service office, which will offer greater visibility and accessibility, will continue to offer care to a 19-county area in northwest Iowa and oversee eight satellite facilities.

Discovery House plans Spencer expansion

Spirit Lake’s transitional, sober housing organization Discovery House will have an additional location in Spencer. Discovery House will make its Spencer home in the building formerly occupied by the Centers Against Abuse and Sexual Assault.

Executive Director Jessica Amendt visited the Clay County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday to inform them of the new facility and to request a monthly donation from the county.

Iowa Rocks! Youth Showcase to perform Saturday

DES MOINES — The Iowa Rock ‘n Roll Music Association is very proud to present the Iowa Rocks! Youth Showcase on Saturday on the Knapp Stage at the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines. Two individual artists and five bands will perform from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. All the artists were either past award winners, finalists, or champions of the Iowa Rock ‘n Roll Music Association’s Iowa Rocks Talent competition — a talent search for youth 21 and younger.

‘The Wedding Singer’ closes out OST 65th anniversary season

The musical comedy, “The Wedding Singer,” written by Chad Beguelin and Tim Herlihy, with music by Matthew Sklar and lyrics by Chad Beguelin, runs from through Sunday, and will wrap up the 65th anniversary season at the Okoboji Summer Theatre.

All-State Choir to perform at Lund Center

ESTHERVILLE — The annual Iowa Lakes Community College All-State Choir Camp, featuring over 130 students from 30 area schools, will offer a free concert at the Janice K. Lund Performing Arts Center on Sunday at 6 p.m.

Bishop celebrating 50th ordination anniversary

Bishop Walker Nickless, of the Diocese of Sioux City, celebrated a milestone Friday, Aug. 4 — the 50th anniversary of his priestly ordination.

He was ordained Aug. 4, 1973, at his home parish, Blessed Sacrament Church in Denver, by Denver Archbishop James Casey. Nickless was ordained the bishop of the Diocese of Sioux City on Jan. 20, 2006, at Nativity Church in Sioux City, by Dubuque Archbishop Jerome Hanus. He adopted the motto, “Speak the truth in love” for his episcopacy.
