Library kicks off Summer Reading May 27

The Spencer Public Library encourages members of the community to sign-up for Summer Reading Program starting with a kick-off come and go from 12:30-5 p.m. May 27. At the kick-off, there will be a popcorn buffet, a craft and the sign-up.

The theme this year is “Read Beyond the Beaten Path” with an emphasis on camp, adventure and skill development.

May is Beef Month: Compare the labels

ORANGE CITY — Consumers can get their dietary protein from two main sources — animals or plants.

But the nutrition of these protein sources depends on the specific product. Let’s compare two patties — one is an 85% lean ground beef patty and the other a Beyond Burger (pea protein) patty.

SHS music receives high ratings at state

Students of the music department at Spencer High School were recently rewarded for their hard work and efforts this spring. The concert band and mixed chorus received a Division I rating from each of their judges. The treble clef chorus received a Division I and two Division II ratings. The SHS choirs are under the direction of Jackie Bryan and the SHS concert band is under the direction of Kurt Schwarck.

ILCC competitors earn top ranking at Iowa SkillsUSA

ANKENY — Seven students attending Iowa Lakes Community College received top rankings at the 2022 Iowa SkillsUSA competition held in Ankeny, on April 7-8. The annual Iowa SkillsUSA competition showcases the best-of-the-best in career and technical education students when they put their skills to the test and compete in more than 50 different trade, technical and leadership fields.

Additional artist, speaker added to RiseFest

SHELDON — RISE Ministries has announced the latest addition to the RiseFest 2022 lineup, Christian music artist, Micah Tyler, and speaker, Dr. Micah Parker.

Ambassadors visit refurbished Parker House

Tuesday, the Spencer Chamber Ambassadors made a visit to the Parker House to see some of the renovations which have taken place. Shelby Nelsen, the director of Clay County Heritage Center, told us that all the first floor hardwoods had been stripped, sanded and refinished by BV Custom Flooring of Spirit Lake. A women's group, the Questors, were key in refurbishing the front door with the help of P & H Cabinets. They were also instrumental in restoring the bathroom and other projects.

City offers instruction for dealing with EAB infected trees

The city of Spencer had been diligently planning for the arrival of the emerald ash borer, and on March 17, the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship confirmed the presence of EAB in the community. In response to recommendations, and in an effort to minimize the potential safety hazards and detriment to citizens and the public tree population, area residents are encouraged to be proactive and prepare for the EAB threat.

Summer forecast offers mix

The roller-coaster ride that is spring will continue to blur the lines between the seasons in the coming weeks, but the light is at the end of the tunnel and widespread, long-lasting warmth is fast approaching.
