Dolores ‘Dee’ Marie Schmidt
Sept. 29, 1921 — Aug. 15, 2024
Dolores Marie Schmidt, the daughter of Peter and Alvina Meyer Herges, was born in Glencoe, Minnesota. Her childhood days were spent in Melrose, Minnesota, where she attended St. Boniface Grade School and Melrose High School. After High School, she went to work as a secretary for a larger local factory, her husband’s Farm & Home Stores (Shoppers Supply) and was a stay-at-home mother, which she excelled in.
On Oct. 11, 1947, Dolores married George Joseph Schmidt in Melrose. They made their home in various places in Minnesota and Iowa, where they owned and operated Farm and Home Stores. In 1966, George and Dolores moved to Spencer and have lived in Spencer and West Lake Okoboji since that time. Dolores was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Milford and most recently a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Spencer, where she was a very devoted Catholic and member of the Altar Society.
Dee, as she was known, loved to be around people. She had a heart of gold and knitted hundreds of slippers and beautiful afghans for family and friends. If she wasn’t knitting, she was in her kitchen constantly baking and cooking, many times bringing her food items to family and friends. She loved her 5 p.m. cocktails with family and friends at her condo, known as “Dee’s Bar.”
Dee was preceded in death by her parents; her stepmother; her husband, George; sister, LaRue and many other family and friends.
Dee passed away on Aug. 15, 2024, at the age of 102 at St. Luke Lutheran Home in Spencer.
She is survived by her sons Chuck (Pat) Schmidt of Spencer and Jim (Ginger) Schmidt of West Okoboji; grandchildren Jessie, Tyler (Ashley), Holly (Brian) Holum and Nate (Brea); seven great grandchildren; two step grandchildren; two brothers: Pete (Joan) Herges Jr. and Tom Herges; sister-in-law Corrine Finnegan.
