Janet Koenig

Janet Koenig, 90, of Spencer, passed away on Sunday, Sept. 1, 2024, at Avera Heart Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 5, 2024, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Spencer. A rosary service will start at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday at the church followed by a visitation up until the time of the service. Burial will be held in the Riverside Cemetery in Spencer.

Janet was born Sept. 13, 1933, in Spencer, to Omer and Marguerite O’Hearn. She lived for a brief time in California and Missouri, but spent most of her life in Spencer.

Janet from Spencer High School in 1950 at the age of 16. During high school, she was in the marching band where she twirled the baton and was on the homecoming court.

She was married to Gerald Walter Koenig Sept 21, 1951. In her spare time while raising 10 children she worked for various local businesses including Carroll’s Bakery. She retired after 20 years from Spencer Hospital then went on to work 20 years more in motels in Spencer.

Janet loved sewing, playing Bingo and puzzles, researching genealogy and her cat, but most of all, spending time and voicing opinions with her family.

She is survived by Mary (Randy) Goyette, Lincoln, Nebraska; Ann (Danny) Dodge, Spencer; Lisa (Randy) Hansen, Spencer; Martha (Gavin) Goodenow, Arvada, Colorado; Ed (Brenda) Koenig, Spencer; Sara (Doug) Harris, Gilbert Arizona; Tina Miller, Manteca, California; 21 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren.

Janet was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Gerald, her siblings Eugene O’Hearn, Pat Johnson, Joan Koenig, Janet’s twin sister Janice Schultz, and Jackie Sorensen. Also preceded in death by her daughters Susan and Nancee, her son Greg, and grandson Little Eddie.
