SPENCER — “The journey continues.”

Tiger coach Bob Schlaeger made the claim following the team’s 8-1 Lakes Conference windy win over Storm Lake Monday night at Spencer’s Riverview Courts.

He was able to pull from some of his team’s depth in the lopsided victory as extreme winds carried lobs all over the court, making it a low elevation strategy for the match.

“We are learning,” he said. “We were able to have some young players play up today.”

Medalist Irvine leads way to invite win

ESTHERIVLLE — Freshman Morgan Irvine topped the five team field with a round of 86 at the Estherville Invite Monday, earning her medalist honors, and leading Spencer to the event title.

As a team, the purple and gold completed the course with a combined score of 378, 27 strokes better than host and the runner-up Midgets.

“Overall a great day for the team,” said Nathan Wendt, Tiger girls coach, “led by a few underclassmen that had their best rounds so far.”

Raquetteers break 5-game skid

STORM LAKE — After a season opening win against Cherokee, the Spencer boys tennis squad dropped five straight. Monday night, on the road at Storm Lake, they broke the skid with an 8-1 victory.

“It was great to get back in the win column tonight after a bit of a losing streak,” said Joe Steele, Spencer boys tennis coach. “I thought the team played very well throughout the lineup.

Middle of the pack

SPENCER — Fifteen teams and 90 golfers took the course at Spencer Golf & Country Club to participate in the Spencer Boys Invitational Golf Tournament Monday.

After 18 holes of action, the Tigers placed sixth in team scoring with 327. Freshman Easton Beehler led the way for the Tigers, shooting a 78.

“Was a very good field with some 3A teams that we could potentially face in district or sectional play,” said Marc Bruning, Spencer boys golf coach.

Iowa Lakes dance team makes history at nationals

The Iowa Lakes Community College Dance Team made history at their first national competition, Dance Team Union’s 2024 College Classic National Championships, held at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Florida. The team competed in the Open Pom and Hip-Hop categories, securing a runner-up position in the highly competitive Junior College Hip-Hop category and a notable third place in Pom.

The Price Cup comes home

SPENCER — Powered by Morningside College recruit Lauren Ellis’ No. 1 singles title run; and the Spencer No. 1 doubles team of Jenna Bennet and Kennedy Graettinger’s runner-up finish, the Tigers would recapture the Denny Price Trophy, returning it home after winning the team’s home tournament Saturday.

Bob Schlaeger, Spencer head coach, called the win a “great showing of our girls. They earned team first place overall, the first time in the six years of this tournament.”

Hoben scores 12 goals in 2 wins

Two games stopped early on back-to-back nights, Thursday and Friday, marked a successful ending to the week for the Spencer Tiger girls who finished with 30 goals, a trio of early stoppages and a clean sheet for the defense and goalie duo, Aubrie Stell and Alexa Hallett. Tuesday, Spencer, now 5-2, will travel Sheldon, for a 5 p.m. contest with the Orabs seeking to improve to 5-0 in NWI Soccer League standings.

Spencer faces elite competition on Sioux City track

SIOUX CITY — Saturday, with temps pushing close to 90 degrees for the first time in 2024, Spencer’s boys and girls track teams ran at the Sioux City Relays, hosted by Morningside College on the track at Olsen Stadium. Though no official team scores were kept, both of the Tigers coed programs had plenty to be proud of.

Boys improve to 6-0 on the pitch

Spencer’s boys soccer team managed to improve to 6-0 overall and 4-0 in NWI Soccer League play, taking down unbeaten Sioux Center and a struggling West Sioux program, the Tigers move on Tuesday looking remain perfect when they host the Sheldon Orabs. Anticipated game time is 6:30 p.m.

Shooting 331 disappointing for Tigers

ORANGE CITY — Not their best moment. That’s the way Spencer boys golf coach Marc Bruning described the team’s performance at Landsmeer Country Club in Orange City, Saturday.

He said he was “a bit disappointed as this was our worst performance of the year as a team, but it's early, need to learn from our mistakes and I know they will be better on Monday (at its home invite).”

Rebels run first at Spencer

SPENCER — With challenging spring weather conditions, Spencer hosted its girls meet Thursday night at Dale Norton Field. Battling strong winds and sporadic rain, Sioux Central would share top placement with Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley with 96 points in an eight team field. For the second straight meet, the host Tigers would end the night in third, earning 80 points.

Rebels fourth in 14-team ELC field

ESTHERVILLE — While Spencer rested the majority of its varsity athletes Friday ahead of Saturday’s visit to the Sioux City Invitational, Sioux Central’s boys ran to a fourth place finish in a talented 14-team field, scoring 33 points.

Owen Mills was responsible for the Rebels top placement in the 400 hurdles, leading the field with a 1:01.42. Lucos Wernimont added a second in the 800.

Wildman: Played our best round of the year

ALTA — Sioux Central coach Chris Wildeman said the Rebels road match at Alta-Aurelia was Thursday was a good sign for the boys golf team.

Wildeman said the squad “played our best round of the year. Hope we continue to build on this round.”

Sioux Central posted a 185, led by Carter Smith’s 44. Other scoring rounds were turned in by Jacob Gunderson, 45; Boden Bright, 46; and Reid Anderson, 50.

Wildeman called the 185 a “good team effort.”

Laker softball sweeps Hawks

The Iowa Lakes Community College softball team swept Northeast Community College. The Lakers combined for 24 hits in the two games, winning the first game 12-8 and the second game 16-3 in five innings. The Lakers are now 13-23 overall and 4-12 in conference play.

A local effort by Spencer High School No Boundaries student participants and Rugby enthusiasts has resulted in the establishment and formation of both a boys and girls club based in Spencer.
