Tigges, Dirkx receive all-state recognition

SPENCER — The Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association recently announced its selections for all-state and academic all-state teams.

After having a solid season and peaking at the right time, advancing to a game within the state tournament. The Spencer Tigers would finish with a 19-9 (4-6) record, advancing to the Class 3A Substate final, before their season would end to the Sergent Bluff-Luton Warriors.

ILCC softball signs Goosmann

Iowa Lakes Community College head softball coach, Katie King, announced the signing of Madison Goosmann to the 2022-23 recruiting class. Goosmann is the daughter of Jay and Autumn Goosmann and is a graduate of Hinton High School in Hinton.

“We are very excited to welcome Madison and her family into our family,” King said. “Madison had an incredible senior season, and we are looking for her to continue this at Iowa Lakes.”

Record-setting win

SPENCER — After a rainy Saturday and Sunday morning, players were questioning if they would be able to finish the Northwest Amateur tournament without getting drenched in rain. The final pairing of the championship flight, featuring the guys in the mix for the win, got started at 3:30 p.m.

Tiger Youth Football Camp wraps up summer

SPENCER — Tiger youth football camp wrapped up their week on Thursday, finishing their 2022 program with the future of Spencer varsity football. Campers got the chance to learn drills, skills and other knowledge surrounding the gridiron.

Laker volleyball completes first week, preseason camp

Summer is over for the Iowa Lakes volleyball team. The Lakers moved into the dorms last weekend and got right to work on Aug. 1. The Lakers completed three days of three-a-day practices/workouts on Wednesday night. Hosted a two day high school volleyball jamboree in which 13 schools, 22 teams including varsity and JV competed. The Laker players and coaches did the officiating and scorekeeping. Thursday night the ladies volunteered at the local Food Bank at the Good News Church.

NW Amateur tees off at Spencer Golf and Country Club

SPENCER — Thursday marked the beginning of the biggest golf tournament in northwest Iowa, the 100th Northwest Amateur at Spencer Golf and Country Club, action got started at 6:30 a.m. tee time. It was a chilly start to the tournament with temperatures in the high 50s to begin play.

Players from all over Iowa, Nebraska and Minnesota are scheduled to participate in the competition, with a contestants from as far away as Roseville, California.

Tiger football camp in full stride ahead of season

SPENCER — Summer camp workouts are usually where a football team’s season begins, it shows the skills, and what coaches can expect to come during the regular season. It’s no different in Spencer. Camp takes place during the week from 5:30-8 p.m., ahead of official season practices which begin Monday, Aug. 8.

Sacred Heart School’s annual Dave Nelson Memorial Golf Tournament set for Aug. 15

The 2022 Sacred Heart School’s Annual Dave Nelson Memorial Golf Tournament will take place on Monday, Aug. 15, at the Spencer Golf and Country Club. Registration begins at noon with a shotgun start at 1 p.m., and the format is four-person best ball. This 18-hole Golf Classic Tournament is dedicated to the memory of Dave Nelson, who for several years, gave so unselfishly of his time and financial resources to ensure the success of this event.

Fourth annual Boji Mammoth Golf Tournament Fundraiser Aug. 12

The Boji Mammoth High School Hockey team is hosting the fourth annual Boji Mammoth Golf Tournament Fundraiser on Friday, Aug. 12, at Brooks Golf in Okoboji. This four-person, nine-hole golf tournament has a shotgun start at 3 p.m. with a buffet following for all registered golfers. There will be a few fun games out on the course to make things extra interesting as well as a silent auction table full of sought after, varied items, waiting to go home.

Clark takes 8th Men’s Club championship

Mike Clark shot rounds of 68-73-37 for a total score of 178, finishing 2-down over 45 holes to win is eighth Men’s Club Championship. Runner-up Travis Cooke placed just one shot behind with a 1-under-par 179. Forty-one golfers participated in the tournament.

7 Tigers represent Spencer in conference recognition

SPENCER — The Lakes All-Conference teams were recently announced with plenty of representation from the Spencer softball girls. After an impressive 24-8 (8-2) season that ended in an 8-4 loss in the second round of their regional semifinal to the Bishop Heelan Crusaders.

Dirkx takes runner-up for Diamond Sports scholarship

SPENCER — The American Legion Baseball Scholarship sponsored by Diamond Sports specializes in other things off the baseball field. Such as community involvement and an athlete's GPA are the biggest factors in finding the right candidate to award the scholarship to. Recent Spencer graduate Devin Dirkx was runner-up for the award.

Dick Meiners, the commissioner of Iowa American Legion Baseball, spoke on the importance for the award.

100th Northwest Amateur starts next Thursday

SPENCER — The Northwest Amateur is known as Iowa’s only 72-hole golf tournament, and this year is a benchmark for the tournament. It will be the 100th running of the event at the Spencer Golf and Country Club.

The tournament this year will be taking place next week from Thursday, Aug. 4, to Sunday, Aug. 7.

Iowa Central’s Moffitt inducted into Glen Brand Hall of Fame

WATERLOO — Iowa Central head wrestling coach Luke Moffitt was inducted into the Glen Brand Wrestling Hall of Fame at the end of June. Moffitt began his wrestling journey at Estherville High School, winning an Iowa state high school championship in 1997 for the Midgets.

Iowa Lakes student athletes earn academic recognition

Iowa Lakes Community College was recently honored by the National Junior College Athletic Association for academic achievements during the 2021-22 school year.

Each year the NJCAA recognizes both teams and individuals for academic success. Five Iowa Lakes teams received honorable mention for earning a team cumulative GPA above 3.0: softball — 3.58, women's golf — 3.29, men's golf — 3.24, men's soccer — 3.1 and women's soccer — 3.02.
