Outdoors: Looking forward to fishing

For the past couple of months I’ve been thinking about where I hope to go fishing this spring, summer, and fall. It’s always fun to visit new areas, but I also like to return to areas where I’ve been before. Following are some areas that I’ve enjoyed and that an angler might want to consider visiting.

Outdoors: Preparing for a trip to Devils Lake

Back in February of 2020 (before the pandemic hit), the Iowa Great Lakes Fishing Club held its annual spring fishing seminar at the Hap Ketteleson Community Center in Everly. On had that night was pro angler, guide and educator Johnnie Candle, who headquarters out of Devils Lake, North Dakota.

Tiger girls win Sheryl Maahs Relays

SPIRIT LAKE — The Tiger girls took the track Tuesday in Spirit Lake to compete in the Sheryl Maahs Relays. Spencer outscored Algona and the Indians to take first place at the meet.

Tiger girls calm the Tornadoes 8-1

STORM LAKE — The Tiger girls tennis team faced Storm Lake on Monday night. Spencer would defeat their Lakes Conference rivals 8-1 to pick up the match victory.

Spencer took five of six in the singles matches and won all three doubles contests.

Tigers record sixth straight shutout

SPENCER — The Tigers girls soccer team hosted Sheldon Sibley-Ocheyedan at the Spencer Soccer Complex on Tuesday. Spencer would be led by Mallory Klemme and Saddie Kahley who each recorded a hat-trick in the 10-0 victory ending the game at half. The win was the sixth straight for the Tiger girls, they all have been shutouts. Goalie Aubrie Stell hasn’t allowed a goal since April 1.

Tiger boys finish third in Spirit Lake

SPIRIT LAKE — Spencer traveled north to Spirit Lake to compete in boys track. The team would finish in third place behind the Indians and Okoboji Pioneers. The boys would take the top spot in five events and finished third as a team.

Tiger boys sweep Storm Lake, Le Mars 9-0

LE MARS — The Spencer boys tennis team has been scorching through their competition all season long. That didn’t change on Tuesday when the Tiger boys went to Le Mars, sweeping the previously undefeated Bulldogs 9-0 for another meet win. The team improves to 6-0 on the season and 3-0 in Lakes Conference play.

Tiger boys win 5th straight

SHELDON — Spencer traveled to face the Sheldon Sibley-Ocheyedan Orabs on Monday, looking for their fifth win of the season. Spencer went right at the Orabs, hanging five goals in the first half. The boys then added four more in the second half to take the 9-1 victory. Their fifth straight victory of the season, after dropping their opening contest.

Miller, Cooke each card 76 at home invite

SPENCER — The Spencer boys golf team hosted their home invitational on Monday at the Spencer Golf and Country Club. The competition took place in the morning, to allow each golfer to play a full 18 holes. Spencer would finish with a tally of 327, 10 strokes behind the winning team in the Western Christian Wolfpack. Clear Lake and Carroll Kuemper were also ahead of the Tigers.

Rebels win Pocahontas meet

POCAHONTAS — On Tuesday, the Sioux Central girls track team took their first meet win of the season. Winning the meet by 52 points over second-place Humboldt. The girls scored 173 points and won eight events in the Class A.

Lakers softball drops 2 to Iowa Central

The Iowa Lakes Community College softball team dropped two games to Iowa Central. With the two losses, the Lakers are now 27-13 overall and 10-10 in conference.

‘Spaceman’ Bill Lee visits Cardinal Field

SPENCER — It’s not often you get to see former professional athletes in town, Monday, former MLB starting pitcher Bill Lee made his way to Cardinal Field in Spencer. Lee came to teach some tips and tricks to the northwest Iowa American Legion baseball teams. Even coming out to pitch an inning in their intersquad scrimmage.

Tigers win Spencer Girls Invitational

SPENCER — On Thursday, the Spencer girls hosted their home invitational against multiple schools in Iowa. The girls would take the top spot at the meet with a team score of 121.25.

“The girls have been competing hard all season long,” head coach Alan Pierce said. “They put together some very impressive efforts on Thursday. It was just a great night overall for our entire team, and all the kids made gains in their events.”

Tigers blank Warriors, Falcons

HAWARDEN — The Tiger girls soccer team finished their week with two games, having to travel on Thursday and Friday. In dominant fashion, they blanked Sioux Center, 5-0 and West Sioux, 12-0 to improve to 5-1 on the season.

We put together another good aggressive performance from our side,” head coach John Hansel said. “We had much better finishing on Friday, than on Thursday when we faced Sioux Center. This was one of our most creative performances with players trying new stuff.”

Tiger girls defeat Humboldt, Bishop Garrigan

SPENCER — The Spencer girls golf team hosted a triangular on Thursday against Bishop Garrigan and Humboldt. The meet took place at the Spencer Golf and Country Club, with the Tigers taking first with a team score of 198, 26 strokes ahead of second place Humboldt. Senior Mo McDermott led the way for Spencer, carding a 43 and winning medalist honors for the girls.
