McDermott finishes top 10 in 3A State Golf

CEDAR FALLS — Spencer senior girls golfer Mo McDermott got to take the course for the final time as a Tiger on Thursday and Friday. She played in the 3A State Golf Championships at Pheasant Ridge Golf Course in Cedar Falls. Speaking about her goals before the season, McDermott was determined to finish in the top 10 in 3A, and she did just that. She finished in seventh, scoring 161 in the two rounds of play.

Bat survey looking for volunteers

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources and Iowa State University are looking for volunteers interested in performing night time surveys for bats in Dubuque, Pocahontas, Marshall, Franklin and Butler counties.

The survey monitors bat occurrence in key areas of the state. It began in response to declining bat population from white nose syndrome, among other challenges.

Outdoors: Spawning stress causes panfish kills in southern Iowa lakes

Iowa Department of Natural Resources fisheries biologists have investigated recent reports of dead bluegill and crappie in southern Iowa lakes.

These natural fish kills are a common occurrence at a number of lakes each spring during spawning season. There is little danger to the overall population of bluegill or crappie. Iowa lakes can support thousands of panfish per acre of water.

Every now and then I’m asked if I have a favorite place to fish or a favorite fishing technique. For me, those are truly tough questions. They’re tough because I have had the good fortune to fish in an abundance of wonderful locations and have caught lots of fish by employing a variety of techniques.

Outdoors: Trip destination — Devils Lake, North Dakota

I recently spent three days (May 22-24) on an outdoor media trip to Devils Lake, North Dakota. My tie to this trip was through Johnnie Candle, pro walleye angler, Devils Lake fishing guide and outdoor educator. Back in February of 2020, the Iowa Great Lakes Fishing Club held its annual spring fishing seminar at the Hap Ketteleson Community Center in Everly.

Spencer basketball hosting upcoming youth camp

SPENCER — Is your child interested in playing hoops? Is he hoping to get a chance to improve his skills here in Spencer? Spencer basketball is putting on a boys basketball youth camp at Spencer Middle School from June 7-9.

The camp instruction is led by Spencer basketball coaches. The cost per child is $50; if you have a second camper from the same family, it will cost $40.

Tiger offense explodes for 10 runs in opener

OKOBOJI — The Spencer Tigers girls softball team started their season on the road Tuesday. The team faced off with the Okoboji Pioneers, starting out strong with two runs in the first inning. The girls would cruise to an easy 10-3 win in the opening game.

Tigers rout Le Mars 10-0

SPENCER — On Tuesday, it was a matchup between Spencer and Le Mars in the 2A Region 6 semifinal, with the winner having the right to face Denison-Schleswig in the final. Spencer locked in from the beginning and dominated the Bulldogs, 10-0.

Bergstadt and Feldmann finish 6th

WATERLOO — Spencer had four individuals represented at the 2023 Iowa Boys 1A State Tournament in Byrnes Park in Waterloo on Monday and Tuesday. The team sent two doubles teams of Parker Bergstadt and Sam Feldmann, along with Riley DeWitt and Owen Kierscht.

Tigers lose substate semifinal with Storm Lake

SPENCER — On Monday, the Spencer boys soccer team hosted Storm Lake in the 3A-1 Second Round matchup with a chance to advance to the final. The Tornadoes jumped on the Tigers in the first half, taking a commanding 3-0 lead heading into the break.

Spencer would match Storm Lake in the second half, both adding two goals, but the deficit was too much for the boys, who lost 5-2. It’s the first loss for Spencer since the opening matchup with Bishop Heelan at the end of March.

Tigers end season with 8th place finish in Ames

AMES — The Spencer boys golf team competed in the 2023 IHSAA 3A State Golf Championships on Monday and Tuesday at Veenker Memorial Golf Course. Spencer would reside in eight place after day one but would struggle on their second day at the Iowa State course.

Huckfelt’s moonshot silences Monarchs

SPENCER — The Tigers picked up another victory on Monday against Denison-Schleswig. Sending the Monarchs home in just five innings with the 10-0 victory. The win moves the Tigers to 3-1 on the season.

Rebels dominate Braves 13-0 in season opener

CHEROKEE — The Sioux Central Rebels softball team kicked off its season with a game at Cherokee on Tuesday. They didn’t waste any time attacking on offense, torching the Braves for nine runs in the top of the first inning. Sioux Central would defeat Cherokee 13-0 in three innings, since it is required to call the contest if the lead is 12 or more after the third inning.

Rebels drop opening game with Cherokee 5-3

CHEROKEE — After finishing up the track season, Sioux Central was officially ready to begin its 2023 summer baseball season. The team started its season with a game at Cherokee-Washington to face the 0-3 Braves. Cherokee would get the better of Sioux Central thanks to the fourth inning, winning 5-3.

Merchant signs to UNI

SPENCER — Fresh off winning the 100-meter hurdles state championship in 3A last weekend, Spencer’s Jerra Merchant decided where she wanted to continue running track. Merchant made the decision official on Tuesday to be a Panther for the University of Northern Iowa.

Bulls Eyes season in full swing

The GTRA Bulls Eyes Trap Team spent most of February and March practicing indoors with the DryFire Simulator at the Ruthven American Legion. Experienced athletes worked on refining their skills, new athletes learned about stance, gun mount, hold points, lead time and follow-through along with safety procedures to follow on the range. The athletes were finally able to get outside in April and put those skills to the test with live ammunition.
