Miller sets new 500 school mark

BOONE — Oliver Miller recorded the Spencer Tigers lone swimming victory Tuesday night in Boone against the host team and Carroll, and in doing so, set a new school mark in the 500-yard freestyle.

“Congratulations to Oliver Miller for breaking the 500 freestyle school record with a new time of 5:12.44,” Spencer boys head coach Amie Lawrence said. “We continue to have time drops in many events and are looking forward to our Lewis Central Invitational this Saturday.”

Cherokee too much for Tiger boys

SPENCER — The boys from Spencer struggled from the floor, despite 18 points from Cael Bruning and 12 from Jack Berends, in Spencer’s 67-51 home loss to Cherokee Tuesday. The Tigers shot just 39% from the field an 31% from three in the 16-point defeat in Lakes Conference action. Spencer dropped to 4-5 overall.

Krager cracks 1,000 points in win

SIOUX RAPIDS — Kasey Krager’s Sioux Central girls managed an eight-point team victory against visiting Emmetsburg Tuesday night in the first game of a girl-boy doubleheader. The Rebels downed the E-Hawks, 53-45 in Twin Lakes action, improving to 11-1 and 4-1 in Twin Lakes action.

E-Hawks top Rebel boys by 30

SIOUX RAPIDS — Sioux Central dropped to 2-3 in Twin Lakes Conference boys action, and 3-7 overall, following a 30-point home loss to Emmetsburg Tuesday night. The Rebels failed to get any scorer in double digits in the 73-43 defeat.

Sioux Central failed to get any scorers in double digits while their guests produced four.

Former Spencer on-air talent wins Emmy

Former Spencer resident and radio host Jon Armond picked up a 2024 Emmy for outstanding narration in a TV series associated with his work with the NFL’s New York Jets on CBS. “One Jets Drive” can be heard biweekly during the NFL season on CBS in New York. The HBO “Hard Knocks” style show details football life on and off the field in the nation’s No. 1 media market.

Iowa Lakes’ Evans named ICCAC Athlete of the Week

ESTHERVILLE — Iowa Lakes men's basketball player Kai Evans was named the ICCAC Athlete of the Week. Iowa Lakes took down No. 5 Ellsworth 81-69. Evans had a solid game for the Lakers going 9-for-18 for the field for 22 points. He was also heavy on the glass, as well, with four offensive rebounds and nine defensive rebounds. He made play-after-play for the Lakers to allow them to hold home court and stay in the race in the ICCAC standings.

The Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation recently completed the purchase of 132 acres on the east side of Big Spirit Lake (to the east side of 270th Avenue) from the Gruhn family. The property will eventually be sold and transferred to the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service and opened to the public.

But most ice anglers agree that weather can have a significant impact on ice fishing success. They know that there are some types of weather that make fish under the ice want to bite, and there are some types of weather that spoils their appetites.

Hunting seasons will begin closing soon in early January. Pheasant, archery turkey and deer seasons, and late muzzleloader deer season close on Jan. 10. Goose seasons start closing first in the north zone on Jan. 13, followed by the central zone on Jan. 20, and the south zone on Jan. 27.

The season for quail, partridge, ruffed grouse, and squirrels closes Jan. 31. Rabbit season closes Feb. 28.

Well, I think it’s finally going to happen! Yes, I think it’s time to make sure you have all your ice fishing gear ready to go. Beginning Wednesday, Jan. 10, the low is forecast to be in the single digits.

Lakers women fall at home

ESTHERVILLE — The Iowa Lakes women’s basketball team fell at home to Ellsworth Community College, 59-57, Wednesday night, Jan. 10.

The Lakers were led by Allo Wolff with 16 points and Jordyn Stokes added 11 points.

Ellsworth was led by Taylor Ross with 13 points.

The Lakers are 6-10 on the season and 2-5 in conference play. The Lakers next home game is Saturday against NIACC at 1 p.m.

Iowa Lakes men top No. 5 Ellsworth

ESTHERVILLE — The 15th-ranked Iowa Lakes men's basketball team knocked off fifth-ranked Ellsworth with a 81-69 win Wednesday night, Jan. 10. The Lakers moved to 12-4 on the year and 4-2 in Iowa Community College Athletic Conference play.

The Lakers were led by Kai Evan with 22 points and 13 rebounds. Blake Kooiman added 17 points, Sam West had 15, and Benard Omooria added 11.

Ellsworth was led by Clifton Efinda with 22 points.
