SPENCER — The Tigers came home Friday to host the West Sioux Falcons at the Spencer Soccer Complex. The Tigers wasted no time, dominating West Sioux for a 10-0 victory. After already defeating Sioux Center 4-0 on Thursday. The boys scored five goals in each half to end the game in the second period. It was a total team effort, with six different Tigers finding the back of the net.

SPENCER — Sioux Central traveled up U.S. Highway 71 on Thursday to compete at the Spencer Girls Invitational. The Rebels would finish in second place, behind the Tigers, scoring 107 team points.

“Another windy night didn’t lend itself to many PRs but we still competed well against some good area teams,” head coach Brett Trierweiler said. “As a team we finished second to the Spencer varsity team. The girls' effort showed throughout the evening as they fought the wind.”

ESTHERVILLE — The Sioux Central boys track team traveled to Estherville Lincoln-Central on Friday to compete in the Dick Barrett Relays. The 4x400-meter relay team of Max Adams, Greg Peterson, Carter Boettcher and Ethan Mills ran to first for the Rebels. The group put together a time of 3:32.51. Peterson then took first place in the 400-meter hurdles, clocking a 56.44 for his season best time.

SIOUX RAPIDS — The Sioux Central boys and girls golf teams hosted the Alta-Aurelia Warriors on Friday at the Little Sioux Golf and Country Club. The Rebels boys would drop their match with the Warriors, losing 168 to 193. Jack Bloom led the way for Alta-Aurelia, carding a 38 in his round to earn medalist honors. Lucas Baker of the Warriors was the runner-up, scoring 42 on the night. For the girls, Kendra Casey led the way with a 40 for Sioux Central, earning medalist honors.

The new Armed Forces Hunting and Fishing licenses are now available to residents of Iowa who served in the armed forces of the United States on federal active duty. The new annual fishing license, or hunting and fishing combo license, is $5, with a $2 processing fee.

A second and final season of dredging on Black Hawk Lake, located in Sac County, will start this week and is scheduled to end in early June. An additional two to three weeks of site clean-up and contractor demobilization will follow the dredging work.

Some friends and I gathered recently and as so often happens at these gatherings, the talk turned to fishing. One friend indicated that he was seriously thinking about trying plastic baits for walleyes this fishing season. Another friend said it was “about time.”

What a crazy, crazy last couple weeks of weather! This little part of northwest Iowa has seemed to be stuck in the deep freeze.

It took until April 12 when East Okoboji went out, followed by Big Spirit and West Okoboji on April 13 (with just a little floating ice still around. The dock builders and hoist barges took off like they were shot from a cannon.

SPIRIT LAKE — It was a battle of northwest Iowa schools in girls track at Spirit Lake on Tuesday. Primarily, a three-headed race between schools in the local area. Spencer came out on top with a score of 167, Spirit Lake followed with a 148 and Okoboji finished in third with a score of 134. Emmetsburg, North Union and Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn rounded out the team scores.

SPENCER — It was a beautiful day at the Riverview Tennis Courts on Monday for lakes conference girls tennis. Spirit Lake-Okoboji came down to face off with the Tigers in a packed house, a lot of people were in attendance to see the battle of the girls. SL-O dominated the Tigers 8-1, proving why they are one of the best teams in the state in girls tennis.

SPENCER — The Tiger girls soccer team took full advantage of the sunshine on Monday, exerting their will on the Nighthawks. The girls dominated from the start and defeated Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley 12-0, ending the game at halftime.

"I felt like it was a good performance from the first touches of the game,” head coach John Hansel said. “Our passes were intentional and direct. We were able to be dangerous from the beginning. It was a good win for us."

SPIRIT LAKE — The Spencer Tiger girls golf team opened their 2023 season at Okoboji View Golf Course on Tuesday. The team got after it, coming up with a conference win over the Indians, 192 to 205. Meredith Baker shined for Spencer, earning medalist honors with a low score of 45. One stroke ahead of runner-up medalist Emma Whiting of Spirit Lake.

LE MARS — After placing second in Cherokee, the Spencer boys track team was determined to take the top spot Monday. The team competed at the Don Shilling Invitational in Le Mars. Spencer took the top spot in seven events, winning five team events. The guys put together the best team performance, winning the event by ten points over Le Mars.

HULL — Spencer traveled to face the Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley Nighthawks on Monday in soccer. The boys started off chippy, but were able to settle in and defeat the Nighthawks 5-1 for their second win of the season. Owen Olson scored twice for Spencer; Camden Mosher and Cayden Brewer scored the others for the Tigers. Olson has already picked up seven goals for Spencer after three games.
