SPENCER — The Spencer archery team hosted its community shoot day on Saturday at the Spencer Middle School. The fundraiser capped off the end of the year celebration for the archery team.

AMES — The Spencer boys track team opened a brand new season Friday when they traveled to Iowa State University to compete in the IATC Indoor Championships in Ames. Gavin Timmer, Reid Tigges, Preston Pitts and Ross Carlson had the best performance finishing in third in the 4x400 relay, with a time of 3:36.54. Timmer finished fifth in the 400 with a time of 51.68. Pitts finished in seventh in the high jump with a score of 5-09.

Lakers win twin bill

The Lakers fell in the quarterfinals of the ICCAC Region XI Tournament to No. 6-seeded Northeast 43-46. The Lakers were led by Ihari Oromo (pictured above) with 12 points and nine rebounds.

Iowa Lakes announced the signing of Myla Murphy to the 2023-24 recruiting class. Myla is the daughter of Travis Murphy and attends Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire.

SPENCER — Spencer Tiger senior Elli Heisinger made her official decision to sign to Minnesota State University in Mankato to continue her athletic and academic career. Heisinger will compete in track and field as a thrower for the Mavericks.

It’s that time of year again, where uneasy is the normal for most sports fans, especially if you love March Madness. The unthinkable, all of sudden can seem possible. The cinderella story every year always captures our hearts. It’s time for another March Madness Tournament.

MEN'S TOURNAMENT

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources has finalized a drought plan for use by local, county, state agencies and governments in the event of droughts in the state.

The Iowa Drought Plan was developed in partnership with the Iowa Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management and the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship. The plan aims to provide the state with an approach to prepare for, identify, respond to and recover from a drought.

It’s been six months since pro walleye angler and Fresh Water Hall of Famer Keith Kavajecz’s fishing seminar at the Okoboji Blue Water Festival last August. With spring moving every closer, I thought it would be appropriate to reflect on his suggestions for open water fishing.

I know that he hit home with his points, because over 200 anglers sat through the 90-minute seminar, and nobody got antsy and left.

Kavajecz began his presentation, talking about clean water.

As a youngster fishing was something that I enjoyed more than almost anything. It’s hard to explain why, and it doesn’t matter. I just really enjoyed fishing. But sometimes when I would listen to the adults talk about fishing, they would often refer to the “old days” of fishing, and how “fishin’ today just isn’t as good as it used to be.”

Located east of the Mini-Wakan State Park entrance (north side of Big Spirit Lake) on the Grade Road or Stateline Road, sits a parcel of farmland that always floods in the spring and again during heavy spring and summer rains. The temporary nutrient rich water is then drained across into McClelland Slough, finally reaching Big Spirit Lake. Conservationists, clean water groups and lake homeowners in the Iowa Great Lakes Watershed have worked for years to secure this property.

SPENCER — It all started back in 1972, when the annual Iowa Shrine Bowl was created. Now 51 years later, Logan Huckfelt will get his chance to compete against some of the best in the state of Iowa on the gridiron at the UNI Dome in Cedar Falls on Saturday, July 22, at 4 p.m.

SPENCER — Six Spencer High School cheerleaders will get to represent Spencer at the Iowa High School Shrine Bowl in July. The girls were all recognized on Wednesday at the Shrine Bowl Dinner at the Clay County Regional Events Center.

MacKenzie Manwarren, Aneli Hicks, Trinity Pullen, Veronica Studer, Aubrie Davis and Raegen Stevens will all be on the sidelines.

3 Lakers named ICCAC Athletes of the Week

DES MOINES — After a great weekend of wrestling in Des Moines on Feb. 26, Spencer AAU Girls ages third through sixth grade finished in fifth place for the Tigers. Tori Lange, Jada Mingus-Alfaro, Emersyn Brockman, Brooklyn DeMann, Keyana Mingus-Alfaro, Harper Depew and Zoey Konrady all competed for the Tigers.
