Spencer girls fall to No. 12 Indians

SPENCER — Fifth-ranked Spirit Lake played a decisive first half and defeated the Spencer girls basketball team, 57-26, Friday night, Jan. 5.

The Indians, now 6-3 on the year, led 41-11 at the half against the Tigers, who remained winless.

Rebels girls win 2 of 3 on the mat

ROCKWELL CITY — A short-handed Sioux Central Rebels girls wrestling squad traveled to Rockwell City Thursday, Jan. 4, for a conference quad with South Central Calhoun, Manson-Northwest Webster and GTRA-ELC.

Sioux Central defeated Manson-NW Webster 39-21, fell to GTRA-ELC 42-24 and defeated South Central Calhoun 39-30.

No. 5 Rebels control Raptors

HOLSTEIN ― Sioux Central raced to a 17-point lead after eight minutes and didn’t look back in claiming a 67-33 girls basketball win on the road Tuesday, Jan. 2.

The fifth-ranked Rebels (9-1) led 22-5 after the first quarter, 36-17 at the half and 62-27 after three quarters. Ridge View fell to 4-6 with the loss.

Rebels fall behind, can’t catch Ridge View

HOLSTEIN ― Sioux Central was outscored 33-9 in the first and third quarters combined and dropped a road game to Ridge View, 53-41, Tuesday night, Jan. 2.

The Rebels fell behind 17-2 after the first quarter, but fought back to within 26-21 with a strong second quarter.

Lakers women fall on the road at DMACC

ANKENY — The Iowa Lakes women’s basketball team fell on the road at DMACC Wednesday, Jan. 3, by a score of 78-58.

DMACC led 18-10 after the first quarter, 38-27 at half and 56-39 after three periods.

The Lakers were led by Jazlin King with 10 points and Tayona Keys added nine points.

DMACC was led by Reanna Hutchinson with 15 points.

Lakers fall at home to DMACC

ESTHERVILLE — The Iowa Lakes men’s basketball team fell to DMACC, 93-74, to move to 11-4 overall and 3-2 in Iowa Community College Athletic Conference play in a game played Wednesday, Jan. 3.

The Lakers were led by Sam West with 26 points, Kai Evans added 24, and Blake Kooiman had 10.

DMACC was led by Trevian Carson with 17 points.

Outdoors: With shotgun seasons over, deer hunting shifts to late season mode

With the two shotgun seasons now in the books, Iowa’s deer hunting shifts to a more solitary endeavor with the opening of the late muzzleloader season and the reopening of the archery season.

Jace Elliott, state deer biologist for the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, said roughly 15,000-20,000 hunters will participate in the late muzzleloader season and likely harvest about 10,000 deer.

A popular topic lately relates to electronics. Mostly FFS is fisher-talk for “forward facing sonar.” FFS enables an angler to see what’s in front of the boat as well as what’s around the boat.

Each November the Iowa Great Lakes Fishing Club hosts its annual fall Department of Natural Resources night at Oak Hill Outdoor on the north side of Milford. With over 350 members, the goal is to get as many members as possible there to learn more about the efforts of the law enforcement and fisheries biologists across northwest Iowa.

No. 2 Sports Story of 2023: Lakers reach top of the mountain

That’s the word the Iowa Lakes men’s soccer team can call themselves after claiming the NJCAA Division II Soccer title on Nov. 18 in dramatic fashion, winning a 5-3 shootout following a scoreless double-overtime affair with Phoenix College in front of a locally partisan crowd.

Nachtigal notches 100th career win

CARROLL — “We knew going into Monday’s tournament at Kuemper we were going to see some teams that we hadn’t seen before, and some quality teams that we had already faced this year,” Spencer girls wrestling coach Dave Storm said. “It’s exciting as a coach and wrestler to measure yourself against different competition and see where your team is at.”

Super Regional Girls Wrestling Assignments announced

The Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union announced Super Regional Girls Wrestling Assignments which will be conducted on Jan. 26 beginning at 10 a.m. There are four sites around the state which will host. Spencer and Sioux Central’s girls will compete in Region 2 which will be be run at Tyson Arena in Sioux City.

No. 2 'Stangs keep Spencer girls winless

SPENCER — No. 2 Newell-Fonda kept Spencer’s girls basketball winless through the pre-holiday season scheduled, dominating the first half and rolling to a 76-36 win in the Field House to close out 2023 action Friday night.

“I thought we had some good moments throughout the game,” Tiger coach Matt Stevenson said. “Consistency is the name of the game, if you can play with consistency throughout an entire game, you will stay away from extended runs by the other team.

Tiger rally falls short
