DES MOINES — Spencer boys made of its best showings in several years at the State Track and Field competition, Thursday through Saturday on Drake University’s Blue Oval in Des Moines — setting school, season and personal bests amongst the loaded field.

Northwest Iowa gymnasts excel in regional competition

CEDAR RAPIDS — USA Gymnastics Region 4 hosted its 2024 XCEL Regional Championship Competition, April 19-21, at the Alliant Energy PowerHouse in Cedar Rapids. More than 2,600 athletes from seven states competed in the Silver-Diamond levels. Gymnasts advanced to regionals after qualifying in the All-Around at their respective state competition.

Outdoors: 2024 spring turkey season was one for the record books

The final segment of Iowa’s spring turkey hunting season closed Sunday, ending the spring season with a record harvest of 16,059 birds reported, surpassing the 2023 record harvest of 14,843.

Turkeys were reported from all 99 counties, from a high of 649 birds bagged in Clayton County to a low of three in Osceola.

July has been Lakes Appreciation Month for the past 26 years. To help us celebrate, appreciate, and bring attention to lakes, we are inviting elementary, middle, and high school students to submit posters reflecting on how important lakes are to all of us. Submitted artwork will be a big part of NALMS’ celebrations through July across North America.

SIOUX CITY—It all came down to the No. 1 doubles match Wednesday. Spencer’s Lauren Ellis and Julia Gastelum faced Sioux City Heelan’s Friis sisters - Lilly and Aila - to settle a 4-4 match for the right to move on to the IGHSAU State Team Tennis Tournament.

WEBSTER CITY—In a tight battle for the top spot among the Class 3A Region 1 girls golf field, a strong team showing of 369 by Spencer on the 18-hole Briggs Woods Golf Course in Webster City, left the Tigers out of the state meet field, finishing fourth overall among the 12 team field.

Spencer JFK dancers shine at National Together We Dance Competition

ROCHESTER, Minn. — The Spencer Just For Kix dancers showcased their talent and dedication at the National Together We Dance Competition, April 24-28, in Rochester, Minnesota. This event brought together dance teams from across the region — Iowa, Minnesota, Colorado, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Illinois and Wisconsin — to compete in various categories.

Tigers baseball team rolls in road opener

ALTA—Alta-Aurelia struggled on the hill, and Spencer took full advantage Tuesday night, routing Alta-Aurelia on the road, 14-1, in 4 1/2 innings, to open the Tigers 2024 summer campaign.

Bulldogs end Spencer boys tennis postseason run

SPENCER—After wrapping up district singles and doubles competition on the Riverview Tennis Courts last Wednesday, the Spencer Tigers again hosted Saturday’s IAHSAA 1A Substate 1 First Round team match, welcoming the 10-7 LeMars boys to town.

It was the Bulldogs who would move on to the next round, stopping the Tigers 5-1, not even requiring any doubles matches to decide the outcome.

CARROLL—An outstanding performance by the Spencer boys golf team left them a little short of a state berth at the IAHSAA Class 3A District Golf Meet, Monday, conducted at Carroll National Golf Course, in Carroll. Unfortunately, with the loaded field, the Tigers’ normally strong 317, left them in fourth place. M-OC/FV, who captured the sectional crown as well on Wednesday, May 8, in Okoboji, took the sectional championship to secure their state spot.

Little Tigers take to the track for year-end tradition

For the fifth grade students in Spencer, Wednesday was an introduction to the year-end tradition of the Little Tiger Relays on the track at Spencer High School’s Dale Norton Field. For the sixth grade boys and girls from Spencer Middle School, Sacred Heart Catholic School and Iowa Great Lakes Lutheran School - it was their final performance in front of the appreciative fans in the stands.
