Tigers fall fast in loss to Tornadoes

STORM LAKE — The Tigers traveled to Storm Lake Wednesday for a diamond face-off against the Tornadoes. Spencer has gotten off to a fast start with a 5-1 record on the young season, but the Tigers fell behind early, allowing seven runs in the first two innings, digging a hole they never could climb back out of. Spencer would outscore Storm Lake 4-1 after the second inning, but lose, 8-5.

Heartbreaking loss

DES MOINES — Cownie Sports Complex in Des Moines hosted the multi-day Iowa Girls Class 2A Soccer 2A Quarterfinal Tuesday. The No. 4 seed Tigers would meet the a senior heavy No. 5 Cedar Rapids Xavier Saints. Spencer’s stingy defense allowed a rare three-goal game to the Xavier squad and the team’s normally potent offense found itself in check in the 3-1 season ending loss.

Spencer girls bounce winless Tornadoes

STORM LAKE — It took a few innings for the Spencer Tiger softball offense to get going on Wednesday, but when they clicked, they really clicked. The Tigers plated 15 runs in the seventh inning, taking a 19 run advantage against Storm Lake for a 21-2 wing. Spencer put up its season high in runs, improving to 2-3.

Spencer sending multiple athletes to Special Olympic Nationals

ORLANDO — Saturday marks the beginning of the Special Olympic National Games in Orlando, Florida. Five different athletes from Spencer will compete in the games. The games will continue June 12.

Everly Heritage Museum to 6-on-6 basketball luncheon

EVERLY — The Everly Heritage Museum is inviting the public to a free special event on June 5 celebrating the history of 6-on-6 girls basketball in Iowa. The event marks the close of an exhibit currently on display at the museum, on loan from the Women's Archives located at the University of Iowa. A visual history, it is entitled “6-on-6 Basketball and the Legacy of Girls' and Women's Sport in Iowa.”

Tigers throttle Bulldogs to clinch state berth

SPENCER — A date at the state girls soccer tournament was on the line at Spencer Soccer Complex Thursday night, when the Tigers faced off against the Le Mars Bulldogs in the regional final.

The two teams had not met during the regular season, but the Bulldogs learned what many other Tigers opponents discovered during the year, Spencer was dominant on the field, controlling possession of the ball throughout game, en route to a 10-0 win.

Tigers split pair of games

The boys baseball team had games on Thursday and Friday to close out the week, losing to Newell-Fonda 9-6, then traveling to MOC-Floyd Valley, defeating the Dutchmen, 12-8, improving to 5-1 on this young season.

 

SPENCER — Brennan Elsbecker started the game for the boys on Thursday against N-F, going five innings, striking out seven batters, in the loss.

DeWitt, Johnson 6th in state doubles

WATERLOO — Spencer a pair of qualifying doubles teams, substate champions Riley DeWitt and Evan Johnson and runners-up Charlie Steele and Sam Feldmann, to the state boys tennis tournament at the Black Hawk Tennis Club in Waterloo DeWitt and Johnson would finish sixth overall.

Spencer softball 1-3 during 3-day stretch

It was a tough stretch for the Spencer Tigers softball team, playing four games in a three-day stretch, facing Newell-Fonda, at home Thursday; against MOC-FV, Friday; and finishing off with a pair against Heelan and Underood at the Bishop Heelan Tournament Saturday.

The girls would drop the game with Newell-Fonda, 13-5.

Schroeder, Berends end season in state 2nd round

IOWA CITY — The girls state doubles tournament, hosted at University of Iowa at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex on Friday, included Spencer’s No. 1 doubles team, Kinsey Schroeder and Haley Berends. The pair had been dominant for the Tigers all season long, and drew a first round matchup against Lewis Central. Spencer pulled through winning the match, 3-6, 6-4, 7-6, (10-8).

McDermott, Casey wrap up seasons at state

ADEL — Spencer’s Mo McDermott competed in the 3A girls golf state tournament on Thursday and Friday, at River Valley Golf Course, in Adel; while Sioux Central’s Kendra Casey joined the field in the 2A tournament at Pheasant Run Golf Course in Cedar Falls.

McDermott, in her 36 holes of work, carded an 87 on day one, shaving three strokes off her day two total for an 84. The 171 earned her 11th place in 3A.

Tigers rout Monarchs

DENISON — The Spencer baseball team traveled to Denison-Schleswig Monday to face the Monarchs. The Tigers bats have been on fire, outscoring their opponents 37-11 on the season so far. The bats continued to click against Denison, as the boys amassed eight hits, producing 11 runs in the 11-1 dominant win over the Monarchs, to remain undefeated on the season at 4-0.

Spencer boys golf places 7th at state

AMES — Monday and Tuesday, Spencer boy’s golf squad competed in the Class 3A State Golf Tournament, at Veenker Memorial Golf Club in Ames. The Tigers finished seventh after a two days of 18 hole play, combining for a team score of 696.

Olson finds the net twice in postseason win

SPENCER — The Spencer Tigers hosted the semifinal substate contest against the Sergeant Bluff-Luton Warriors Tuesday, avenging last season’s double overtime loss which ended the Spencer season in the substate final. In a physical battle with the Warriors, the hosts came out on top to advance to the substate final, 4-0.

Johnson, Edwards combine for 8 goals in win

SPENCER — Tuesday afforded the Spencer girls a chance to advance to the regional final and teammates Alexa Johnson and Aliza Edwards made sure it happened. The two girls scored eight of the team’s 10 goals in the shutout victory against Spirit Lake Park-Okoboji. The double-digit margin resulted in early stoppage.

A date at state: Tigers to meet top-seed Pella in opener

SPENCER — Wednesday night at Spencer Soccer Complex, the Tiger boys soccer team accomplished something they hadn’t done in over a decade, earning a trip to the state tournament, following a 4-0 win against the Bishop Heelan Crusaders in the substate final showdown.

The Tigers, seeded No. 8, will face top-seed Pella at 2:30 p.m., Wednesday, at the James Crownie Sports Complex in Des Moines, to open state play.
