Boys amass 22 runs, allow 1 following ELC loss

Heading into the last couple of weeks of play, the Spencer baseball squad has put together an 8-2 mark in its last 10 appearances, going 2-1 on the week. The next five games pit the Tigers against teams with a combined record of 33-60 before they close out the year with a pair of home games against Sergeant Bluff-Luton and Humboldt the Fourth of July week.

Spencer will travel to Pocahontas Area Saturday for a noon matchup before beginning a four-game week.

Rebel girls reach 17 wins on the season

Sioux Central’s softball team definitely has some momentum heading into Thursday night’s scheduled contest on the road against state powerhouse Newell-Fonda. The Mustangs won the first meeting un June 3, 7-2.

The Spencer softball team head into a busy week on the heels five straight wins last week to improve to 10-8 overall, heading into a busy week which finishes with the Tiger softball tournament to close things out. The Tigers closed the week with big wins over Spirit Lake, Emmetsburg and powerhouse Storm Lake.

Tiger hard-ballers end week with 2 wins

“This was a nice week for the team,” said Spencer coach Brian Dirkx whose squad improved to 11-5. “We went 3 and 1 — we beat two teams that have been in-and-out of the top 10 in 3A.”

The Tigers downed both MOC-FV in extra innings Thursday and crushed Storm Lake in a week which saw Spencer finish the week with three straight road matchups. Spirit Lake handed their lone loss in four games, claiming a 2-0 pitching showdown Wednesday.

 

Meyer returns to coach ILCC wrestling

ESTHERVILLE — Corey Meyer returns to Iowa Lakes Community College to serve as head men’s wrestling coach and completion specialist, pending board approval, bringing strong knowledge of wrestling, community colleges and the college student experience. Previously, Meyer spent four years as an assistant wrestling coach at Iowa Lakes before joining the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire wrestling coaching staff for the last two seasons.

Outdoors: DNR seeks public input on State Park Administrative Rule Revisions

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is seeking informal comments on administrative rules for Iowa state parks and related programs. Executive Order 10 (EO10), signed by the Gov. Kim Reynolds on Jan. 10 requires all state agencies to identify which administrative rule chapters will be retained or rescinded. The EO10 process includes public engagement with the opportunity for meaningful input.

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources will start treating Lost Grove Lake at the end of June with the approved aquatic herbicide Sonar A.S. to eliminate Eurasian watermilfoil.

Outdoors: Fish cleaning station planned for Highway 9 boat ramp

One of the amenities anglers appreciate is the use of a fish cleaning station. For the past several years at the Iowa Great Lakes, two fish cleaning stations have been available. The first is located at the Emerson Bay State Recreation area on the southwest corner of West Lake Okoboji, while the other is located on the west side of Big Spirit Lake at the Marble Beach State Recreation area. Both include a big grinder that can handle heavy fish cleaning loads.

Sioux Central girls end week 4-1

The Sioux Central Rebels had a productive week, scoring four wins in five nights, suffering one loss at the hands of 14-1 Storm Lake. Now 14-5, the lady Rebels enter their late season run with a 14-5 mark.

Tigers win 3 games behind offensive firepower.

SPIRIT LAKE — Spencer had three contests in three days to open the week. The Tiger softball team took all three games, defeating Western Christian, 12-2, before defeating Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire, 11-8. The team then defeated Spirit Lake 11-4. The offensive production so far this week has powered the Tigers to three victories.

Tigers lose nail-biter to Indians; dominate Wolfpack 10-2

SPIRIT LAKE — After dominating Western Christian on Monday, Spencer traveled north to face a familiar opponent in Spirit Lake. Offense would be a premium in the Lakes Conference matchup, with the Indians prevailing 2-0 over the Tigers. Spencer had two runners in scoring position with two outs in the bottom of the seventh but couldn’t bring them in.

Casey powers Rebels to 2 wins

CORRECTIONVILLE — Sioux Central traveled to River Valley to face the Wolverines on Tuesday. The Rebels hoped to extend their winning streak after winning both games Saturday. The team defeated Emmetsburg 11-3 before defeating River Valley 6-1.

Rebels down E-Hawks behind Boettcher’s complete game

PETERSON — After getting shutout 5-0 by West Bend-Mallard on Friday, Sioux Central was determined to get back on track against Emmetsburg on Monday. The Rebels did just that, scoring 12 runs to end the game in the sixth inning via the run rule. The boys combined for nine hits and dominated the E-Hawks 12-2 for their seventh win of the season.

Iowa Lakes student-athletes honored for academic success

Iowa Lakes athletes were recently honored by the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference for academic achievements for the spring semester of 2023. Every sport is recognized each semester.

The ICCAC recognized 119 Iowa Lakes student-athletes for their academic achievement. The ICCAC has two award classifications: first team (3.5-4.0 GPA), second team (3.0-3.49 GPA).
