Tigers defend home track on Friday

SPENCER — On Friday, the Spencer girls track team hosted a meet at Dale Norton Field. The team would successfully defend their home turf, winning the competition with 153 team points and edging out second-place Algona for the meet victory.

Fassbender, Gastelum earn all-conference honors Saturday

CHEROKEE — On Saturday, the Spencer Tigers traveled down to Cherokee to compete in the 2023 Lakes Conference Tennis Tournament.

Hoben’s 7 goals torch Wolfpack

HULL — Spencer hit the road on Thursday, heading to Hull to face the Western Christian Wolfpack. Spencer dominated from the get-go, throttling the Wolfpack 11-0 to improve to 9-2 on the season. Addison Hoben had seven goals; that’s not a typo either. She torched the Wolfpack defense, but that wasn’t all. Hoben also added two assists in the dominant victory.

Tigers win both meets to end week

CARROLL — On Saturday, the Tigers traveled to Carroll Country Club to compete in the 44th annual Jeanne Spieler Golf Invitational. Spencer emerged victorious in the tournament, scoring 383 as a team to win.

"Our girls really competed well out there," head coach Nate Wendt said. "We learned that each stroke matters on every hole, so that will hopefully help us for the meets to come. It's good to get away from this area a bit and see new competition. It was a team win for sure."

Spencer's Merchant finishes runner-up in 100-meter hurdles at Drake Relays

DES MOINES — Over the weekend, young athletes from Spencer got to showcase their skills on the track at the 2023 Drake Relays. The meet featured the best high school track athletes in the state.

Jerra Merchant started the day off for the Tigers, blazing to a runner-up finish in the 100-meter hurdles. Merchant finished second in the finals with a time of 14.85. She then competed in the 400-meter hurdles, finishing 10th with a time of 1:05.24.

Tigers clinch third straight Lakes Conference Title

STORM LAKE — Spencer traveled to Storm Lake on Saturday to compete in the 2023 Lakes Conference boys tennis tournament. The Tigers have proved that they are the best team in the conference up to this point, winning their third straight conference tournament.

Tigers outlast Wolfpack 1-0

SPENCER — On Thursday, Spencer hosted the Western Christian Wolfpack. The Tigers sat at 7-1 on the season. On a roll, they looked to stay hot against the undefeated Wolfpack. The Tigers would mark the first blemish on their record when Iain MacRae found Nolan McCusker for the goal in the 51st minute. The lone score would be the difference in Spencer's 1-0 victory.

Tigers finish runner-up at Storm Lake

STORM LAKE — Lake Creek Country Club was the sight for the Spencer boys golf team on Thursday and Saturday to end their week. First, traveling to face the Tornadoes in a conference dual, before heading for a tournament on Saturday. Spencer would finish in second-place behind Carroll-Kuemper, losing by six strokes.

Peterson finishes 25th; 4x100 girls in 60th for Rebels at Drake Relays

DES MOINES — On Saturday, Sioux Central athletes got their shot to prove they belong at the Drake Relays. Greg Peterson was the only boy to compete at the contest. He finished 25th in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.08.

Sioux Central finishes second in conference quad

SAC CITY — The Sioux Central girls golf team traveled to Sac City to compete in a Twin Lakes Conference quad, along with Newell-Fonda, East Sac County and Manson Northwest-Webster. Sioux Central would finish in second place as a team, 16 strokes behind the Mustangs.

Rebels come in fourth at Manson

MANSON — The Sioux Central boys golf team traveled to Manson on Thursday to compete in a Twin Lakes Conference quad. The Rebels competed with Manson Northwest-Webster, East Sac County and Newell-Fonda. The team finished in fourth place with a team score of 202.

Iowa Lakes sweeps final season series

The Iowa Lakes Community College softball team won two games on their final regular season series. The Lakers took game one 3-2 and then game two 10-2 in five innings. The Lakers finish the regular season with a 33-17 record overall and 11-13 in conference.

Lakers honor sophomores with Saturday victory

The Iowa Lakes Community College softball team split against Division I Southwestern Community College. The Lakers lost game one 8-1 and then won game two 13-5 in five innings.

The Lakers did not have much offense in game one, scoring one run on a solo home run from MacKenna Jones.

Honkomp commits to the Beavers

SPENCER — On Friday, Spencer senior Gavin Honkomp made his decision on where he wanted to play football next. Honkomp decided to attend Buena Vista University in Storm Lake to continue his path on the gridiron.

"I’ve been interested in football since a young age; I get to live out a dream," Honkomp said. "I chose to attend BVU. It’s just about being a part of a team with a great group of guys. I’m excited and ready to work.”

Outdoors: Birders of all skill levels invited to Iowa Ornithologists’ Union spring meeting

The Iowa Ornithologists' Union is celebrating its 100-year anniversary as part of its annual spring meeting, May 5-7, at the Stine Barn and grounds, 4000 Turnberry Drive, in West Des Moines.

Anyone who enjoys birding is invited to attend and there is no requirement to attend the entire weekend.
