Spencer’s Morey ready for Fort Dodge

FORT DODGE — Only the best runners get to show off their speed at Fort Dodge for the annual Iowa Cross-Country State Meet coming up on Saturday. Spencer will only have one competitor this year and it will be dominant sophomore runner in Peyton Morey.

Rebel boys, Bloom prepare for 1A State Meet

FORT DODGE — The Rebel cross-country team has been preparing all week for Friday, when Sioux Central will take on the very best Class 1A runners in the state at Fort Dodge. The team has worked hard all year to get here. For the Rebels, their whole boys team qualified after grabbing a second place finish at last week’s district competition in Ridge View.

Gridiron Glance — Playoffs Round 1

GLENWOOD (6-3, 4-1) at SPENCER (7-2, 4-1) — 7 p.m. Friday — Round 1 Class 4A Playoffs, POD C

Spencer wrapped up the Class 4A-1 district crown with a dominating win over the Storm Lake Tornadoes last Friday. All of that however, gets thrown out the window with postseason play beginning tonight. The 6-3 Glenwood Rams come to Dale Norton Field for round one of the 4A State Playoffs.

Kline surpasses unique milestone

On Monday night, midway through the second set of the Iowa Lakes volleyball match at Dakota State University, Laker sophomore libero Kylie Kline, from North Branch, Minnesota, recorded her ninth dig of the match. Just happened to be the 2,000th dig of her stellar Laker career. Kline went on to record 14 more in that match and another 13 versus Mount Marty, bringing her career total to 2,027 with more matches to play in the 2022 season.

Lakers cap regular season with NIACC win

MASON CITY — The Iowa Lakes volleyball team ended the 2022 regular season with a 3-1 win at NIACC in Mason City, Wednesday night. Set scores were 21-25, 25-16, 25-23, 25-21. The Lakers finish the regular season with a 22-21 overall record and 5-4 in the ICCAC. The 22 wins is the second most wins for Laker volleyball in the last 11 years, the 2015 team won 31. It is the first time the Lakers have finished above 500 since 2015.

Taylor scores hole-in-one

It’s in every golfer’s dream to hit that hole-in-one, some call it skill, everyone else calls it total luck. But it must have been a good day for Dennis Taylor who picked up his first ever ace recently on Hole 9 at the Spencer Golf and Country Club. Taylor used a 6-iron for his shot that went into the cup. Spencer Club Pro Adam Coates said, “Congratulations to Spencer Golf and Country Club member Dennis Taylor as he scored his first hole-in-one.


STORM LAKE — Can you picture to yourself that its 1995, smartphones weren’t a thought yet. The national average for a gallon of gas was $1.15, Nebraska football was at its peak, and finally this reporter wasn’t even alive yet.

It’s been that long since the Spencer Tigers captured an outright district title in football, until now.

Tigerettes dance it up at BV comp

STORM LAKE — The Spencer High School Tigerettes Dance Team attended The Dance Challenge at Buena Vista University, Saturday, Oct. 22. The team competed in the varsity jazz and kick categories as well as junior varsity pom. The team also brought five soloists to the competition: Reese Hough, Paris Dean, Monroe Daniels, Mackenzie Manwarren and Aliyah Schon. The girls did a great job coming together and performed well at our first competition of the season.


Rebels lose final game 28-6 to Alta-Aurelia

SIOUX RAPIDS — On a special Thursday night the Sioux Central Rebels hosted the Alta-Aurelia Warriors in the final game of the season between the two on the football field. The Warriors dominated Sioux Central through the air, Alta QB Cale Brechwald completed 12 of 26 passes for 220 yards and two touchdowns. Including a 20-point outburst in the fourth quarter to lead the Warriors to victory. Alta-Aurelia would pick up a 29-6 win over the Rebels to pick up their third win of the season.

Rebel boys take 2nd to advance to state

HOLSTEIN — Sioux Central’s cross-country season has been a successful one to say the least, especially for the boys side of the sport. The Rebels competed in Holstein Thursday for a chance to advance to state as a team.

Lakers travel to Dakota State University

ESTHERVILLE — The Iowa Lakes volleyball team begins the most important week of the season on the road. The Lakers competed in the Dakota State University Triangular Monday and will end the squad’s regular season at NIACC on Wednesday for their final ICCAC showdown. On Saturday the Lakers will be in the Region XI Tournament playing at 1 p.m. versus a yet to be determined opponent and location.

Tigers take on district at Humboldt

HUMBOLDT — Spencer traveled a little over an hour south to compete at Joe Sheldon Park in Humboldt on Wednesday in districts for cross-country.

“We knew going in that it was going to be tough,” Spencer coach Valerie Hamilton said. “We were one of five ranked teams with each of these five teams being ranked as high as seventh at some point throughout the season.”

Tiger season ends in Humboldt Tuesday

HUMBOLDT — Spencer’s season hung in the balance on Tuesday when the volleyball girls traveled to Humboldt to face off against the Wildcats in the first round of postseason play. Unfortunately for the Tigers, it would be their last game of the season, losing to Humboldt in three straight sets. Spencer would drop the first set to the Wildcats in a close battle 25-22. Humboldt would have control all night long, winning set two 25-18.

Tigers host Senior Night at YMCA

SPENCER — It was Senior Night at the Spencer YMCA on Tuesday, when the Tiger swimming team hosted the Sioux City Metro. Spencer has battled with this team at various meets, many different times. The Tigers would fall to the Metro 111-59 on the night.

Iowa Lakes men’s basketball ranked 14th in preseason poll

ESTHERVILLE — The Iowa Lakes men's basketball team debuted at No. 14 in the 2022-23 Preseason National Junior College Athletic Association Men's Basketball Rankings. The Lakers are one of four Iowa Community College Athletic Conference teams ranked joining No. 9 DMACC, No. 17 Ellsworth and No. 18 Kirkwood. Defending National Champion South Suburban is ranked No. 1.
