Matthiesen, Hoben each have pair of goals

WAVERLY — Spencer traveled to Waverly Shell-Rock to compete in a tournament on Saturday. The girls picked up one win and one loss on the day, losing 2-1 to Bondurant-Farrar and defeating Clear Creek Amana 7-0.

Tiger girls golf crowned conference champs

SPENCER — The Spencer girls golf team hosted Estherville Lincoln-Central and Cherokee with one goal in mind on Thursday, winning the Lakes Conference championship. The team was successful, winning the conference matchup by 26 strokes. Spencer scored 188, the Braves had 214 and the Midgets scored 215 in the match.

Spencer sets 4x200 school record

ESTHERVILLE — The Spencer boys track team competed in the Lakes Conference track meet on Thursday night. The team would finish in second place, scoring 119.5 team points. Spirit Lake took the top spot with 163 points. The Tigers might not have won the meet, but they had a lot of personal best performances.

Tiger boys sweep Storm Lake

STORM LAKE — The Spencer boys tennis team finished yet another season undefeated in team play. In fact, the last time Spencer lost a non-semifinal match was in April of 2019. The 2020 season was canceled due to COVID, but regardless, that’s a heck of an accomplishment. The team hosted Storm Lake on Thursday to wrap up their regular season.

Tigers make it 10 in a row

SPENCER — It was senior night against Sioux City East for the Spencer boys soccer team. Izak Peterson, Owen Olson, Aiden Chaffin, Easton Ohnesorge, Ashton Musser, Gavin Gross and Fredy Torres Vazquez were recognized for their dedication to Spencer soccer.

Tigers produce runner-up finish at Carroll

CARROLL — The Spencer golf team hit the road on Saturday to compete at Carroll. The team would have a runner-up finish, scoring 323 team points to finish second. Carroll-Kuemper won the meet with a score of 315. The contest was 18 holes.

"I thought that our guys played very well on Saturday,” head coach Marc Bruning said. "They had to play in a variety of conditions on a course that can be quite challenging.”

Rebels finish 4th in competitive TLC Quad

GOWRIE — Sioux Central traveled to compete in a conference quad on Thursday. The girls would finish in fourth place, scoring 210 as a team. Newell-Fonda took the top spot, scoring 194. Southeast Valley and South Central Calhoun finished tied for second with scores of 204.

Rebels finish 4th at Newell

NEWELL — The Rebels golf team traveled to compete in a Twin Lakes Conference quad against Newell-Fonda, South Central Calhoun and Southeast Valley. Sioux Central finished fourth, scoring 193 as a team in the competition.

Outdoors: Water summary update April 2023

Rainfall in April was just over two inches but 1.5 inches below normal for the month. This comes after a drier than normal March. As a result, streamflows are down across much of the state, and conditions are generally deteriorating in the eastern two-thirds of Iowa. Outdoors: National Amphibian Week is May 7-13

The loud singing from springtime marshes comes from a tiny package, the chorus frog — an inch-long virtuoso common to Iowa. Chorus frogs along with other frogs, toads and salamanders are being recognized during National Amphibian Week, May 7-13.

National Amphibian Week, sponsored by the Partners in Amphibian and Reptile Conservation, is a way to increase awareness about amphibians and to celebrate all things amphibian.

Outdoors: A great Walleye Opener

What a weekend it was for Walleye Opener. For all the forecasts of rain and thunderstorms, they just kept splitting around the Iowa Great Lakes. I know we need rain, but it was certainly a reprieve for anglers. After I get the results from the tournament, I will post them in a column in next week’s paper. Here is a quick update from the weekend.

Spring came, winter returned, then spring reentered the picture. People who like to fish are optimistic that the warmer weather will stay with us this time, and that means it’s time to think about going fishing. For many of us, the first fishing trip of the open water season is in search of crappies.

As an outdoor writer here in Iowa, I feel it’s a good idea to subscribe to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources’ press releases and updates. In that way, stuff that I think is important I can get out to readers. Often, I read reports of people caught breaking hunting and fishing laws. I truly believe these lawbreakers are destroying the natural resources that all of us who have fishing and hunting licenses have the opportunity to enjoy.

Merchant sets 100 hurdles mark

STORM LAKE — The Spencer girls track team has been awesome to watch all season, winning another meet on Monday in Storm Lake. The team scored 126 points, edging out the MOC-Floyd Valley Dutchmen by four points for the win.

Hoben scores 4; Kahley adds hat trick

SPENCER — The Spencer girls soccer team hosted their senior night on Monday. Mary Matthiesen, Mariana Rosales, Isabella Valverde, Aliza Edwards and Jadey Salton were all honored for their hard work and dedication to the Tigers soccer program.

McDermott, Wassom take medalist honors in Algona

ALGONA — The Spencer girls golf team traveled east to Algona to compete with the Bulldogs on Monday. River Road Golf Course was the site of the battle between both teams. Spencer would emerge victorious, downing Algona by 29 strokes in the 194-223 match win. Mo McDermott led the way, carding a 40 in her round to earn medalist honors in the meet. Sarah Wassom recorded a 50, earning runner-up for her performance.
