Girls take 1st at Spirit Lake Meet

SPIRIT LAKE — The Spencer cross-country team traveled north on Tuesday to compete against many other schools in the Spirit Lake Meet. Spencer girls earned a first place finish, and boys earned a second place finish in the competition falling to MOC-Floyd Valley in the contest.

Rebels drop 3rd straight match of season

POCAHONTAS — The Lady Rebels traveled to Pocahontas to face their Twin Lakes Conference rival, the Indians. In the best-of-five series, Sioux Central would lose three straight matches to the Indians. In the first match, they would drop 25-12, following with a 25-14 loss, before losing a close third battle, 25-20.

Lakers stay undefeated with 3-0 victory over RedTails

SPENCER — The Iowa Lakes Community College Lakers were back home again on Wednesday, this time hosting the Hawkeye Community College RedTails at Spencer Soccer Complex. The Lakers got out to a quick start scoring two of their goals in the first four minutes of the contest, Sofian Maghouz found the back of the net in the second minute of the contest to give the Lakers an early lead. Just a minute after that Jason Dyer found his own score opportunity in the third minute.

Tigers lose back and forth battle to Indians

SPENCER — Friday marked the kick off of another football season for Iowa High Schools across the state. Neighboring rival Spirit Lake came to town to face the Spencer Tigers. The stands were packed, the energy of northwest Iowa football was back.

Tiger girls win meet after Morey takes first

SPENCER — The Municipal Golf Course in Spencer was the site of the first cross-country meet of the season for the Tiger boys and girls on Thursday.

Rebels lose heartbreaker to Wolverines

SIOUX RAPIDS — Sioux Central hosted their second game of the season against the West Bend Mallard Wolverines on Thursday. The Rebels were looking to rebound after their opening loss to Estherville Lincoln-Central on Tuesday.

Rebels blown out by Wolverines

SIOUX RAPIDS — Sioux Central hosted their first football game of the new season on Friday, when the South O’Brien Wolverines came to town. It was not the start the Rebels were hoping to get, with three minutes remaining in the first quarter, Wolverine wideout Hudson Oolman hauled in a 45-yard touchdown to give South O’Brien the early 7-0 lead. The score would remain the same until the start of the second half.

Lakers win home opener 5-0

SPENCER — Iowa Lakes celebrated their first home game of the season with a 5-0 win over Central Community College-Columbus on Saturday. Iowa Lakes opened the scoring in the seventh minute when Tatsuki Kobayashi got the ball to Henry Tolbert to put in the back of the net. Lewis Nohar scored the next goal, thanks to a easy tap in, set up by Lewis Duncan in the 26th minute of the match. The Lakers took a 2-0 lead going into halftime.

Injuries, mental mistakes cost Pioneers opener

ARMSTRONG — It was a whirlwind of unfortunate circumstances for Okoboji Friday night, as the Pioneers suffered injuries and several mental mistakes in a 39-0 road loss to North Union in the football season opener in Armstrong.

Sophomore quarterback Landon Duvall was lost for the season with a broken collar bone. Returning starter and senior Ethan Schlachter too was lost with an MCL injury.

The Spencer Tigers start of the 2022 season in the tenth spot in rankings for Class 4A, their first matchup will begin with the neighboring rival Spirit Lake Indians, who Spencer hasn’t defeated since 2017, dropping last year’s matchup 27-13. First year Tiger starting quarterback Riley DeWitt will get his first chance to shine as the new signal caller.

Tigers take 2 wins in Early Bird Tourney

SPENCER — The Tigers varsity volleyball team got off to a great start in their season opening early bird tournament on Tuesday, defeating South O’Brien and Okoboji in two sets. First dismantling the Wolverines 21-9 and 21-16 to advance to the next opponent to face the Pioneers, defeating Okoboji 21-16 and 22-20 in a close battle. Preparing them for a face-off against the Manson Northwest Webster Cougars

Tigers dominate Bulldogs in opening meet

ALGONA — It was the dawn of a new season in the pool for the Spencer Tiger swim team on Tuesday, traveling east on U.S. Highway 18. The girls answered the challenge and came out strong in the opener absolutely dominating the Algona Bulldogs 133.5 to 42.5 in the team scores. Mya Miller put in a strong effort for the girls, winning single events in 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:14.81, and edging out teammate Emily Quanbeck by a second in the 100-yard freestyle.

Rebels drop first match of season to Estherville

SIOUX RAPIDS — The Sioux Central Rebels opened their fall sports season with a volleyball match against the Estherville-Lincoln Central Midgets on Tuesday. The Rebels would lose the best of five match 3-1.

Tigers participate in rainy scrimmage

SPENCER — Friday the annual Spencer football scrimmage was played under rainy conditions. It was a chance for the Tigers to run some offense and defense under simulated conditions ahead of the season home opener against the Spirit Lake Indians Friday 7 p.m. at Dale Norton Field in Spencer. (Above) Riley DeWitt dropped back to pass during the scrimmage Friday night. The senior will take the signal calling reins for the Tigers this season.
