MARSHALLTOWN — Someone once said, “Swimming is the key to a happy life.” The Spencer girls swimming team has a lot to be happy about after qualifying in events for the Iowa State Swimming and Diving Meet at Marshalltown YMCA on Saturday.

OTTUMWA — The Iowa Lakes men's soccer team had their season ended just like the women's team, against the Indian Hills Warriors on Oct. 25. The team would lose the game 2-0. The Warriors would go on to win the regional over Iowa Western the following week.

OTTUMWA — The Iowa Lakes women’s soccer season was ended a few weeks back at the hands of Indian Hills Community College in the Region 11 tournament semifinals on Oct. 26. After a 3 to 3 draw in regulation and two overtime periods was not enough to decide the outcome of the game. Indian Hills would win the shootout over Iowa Lakes to advance 3-1. It was a devastating loss for Iowa Lakes a team who beat the Warriors twice in the regular season and just a few weeks before the region loss.

The Iowa Lakes women’s basketball team defeated Dordt JV 79-41. The Lakers got off to a commanding lead with an 11-0 run. A swarming defensive team effort and a hot start from Brielle Bartelt who scored the game’s first 11 points set the tone for the remainder of the game. The Lakers finished with four scorers in double digits. Bartelt scored a game high 24 points, Ihari Oromo scored 14 points, and Jasmine Jones and Vantaya Johnson each with 10 points.

FORT DODGE — Spencer swimmers traveled to Fort Dodge Senior High School on Saturday to compete for a chance to advance to state. It was an electric atmosphere inside the high school with a packed crowd of parents and fans. Four Tigers stepped up to the challenge and got the job done for Spencer.

ESTHERVILLE — The 2022-23 Iowa Lakes men’s basketball team is looking to pick up right where they left off last year. The Lakers are coming off another outstanding season during the 2021-22 year where they finished with a record of 21-10.

The Lakers open the season ranked No. 14 in the NJCAA preseason rankings. For the 2022-23 season the Lakers have five returning players equipped with a variety of skills that can help lead to the team's success.

OTTUMWA — The Iowa Lakes men’s basketball team traveled to Ottumwa, over the weekend to play in the Indian Hills RV Classic. The Lakers would win one and lose one at the event.

In their first contest of the weekend the Lakers would take on Independence Community a college a NJCAA Division 1 college. The Lakers would jump on Independence early and would never look back, winning the game 78-71.

Postseason accolades for the Iowa Lakes volleyball team began with sophomore middle hitter Rachel Breck being named to the NJCAA Region XI-A all-tournament team. The Lakers lost 3-2 to Hawkeye in the semifinal. Breck logged 17 kills, one assist and one block in the defeat. (Photo submitted)

SPENCER — Logan Huckfelt showed up week in and week out and battled it out with the big men in the trenches on Friday nights. Huckfelt was an anchor on offense and defense for the Spencer Tigers this season. District honors came out last week, and Huckfelt was named co-MVP along with Jaxon Cherry, of Webster City. Huckfelt led the team in tackles with 52 and tackles for loss, with 7.5.

FORT DODGE — The Spencer girls swim team will travel to Fort Dodge Saturday to compete in the Region 3 Swim Meet for a chance to advance to the state meet that takes place on Nov. 11-12 at the Marshalltown YMCA/YWCA.

At the Sioux Central volleyball team banquet on Wednesday, two athletes were awarded conference honors. (Above) Halle Laursen was named to third team all-conference in the Twin Lakes. Berkley Johannsen was also awarded with an honorable mention. Several team members also earned academic all-conference honors and the team as a whole earned an academic team award with the team GPA being 3.73. SPENCER — Dale Norton Field provided an electric atmosphere for the Class 4A-1 first round of the playoffs on Friday. The stage was set for a showdown between the Tigers and the Glenwood Rams. In a game that seemed out of reach at a time, became a nail-biting experience. The Rams would ultimately be too much for Spencer, defeating the Tigers 38-26 and advancing to the second round of the state playoffs.

FORT DODGE — Sioux Central had plenty to look forward too at the state cross-country championships on Friday in Fort Dodge. Their whole boys team was able to qualify for the meet, along with Linnea Bloom for the girls team. Sioux Central would finish in 15th place as a team.

FORT DODGE — Peyton Morey got the chance to compete with the best the state of Iowa has to offer on Saturday for Spencer.

Morey was the only athlete to qualify for the Tigers this season. She was looking to build off of her 12th place finish in 2021. Morey would finish in 21st in her second race at Lakeside Municipal Golf Course. Finishing with a time of 20:02.91.

Laurie Sorrell is dedicated to her well-being as well as her healthy lifestyle that she chooses to live day in and day out. Sorrel has been training for years, working out just to stay in shape. Until she found a new passion and challenge, that translates to competition. Sorrell discovered a flyer from a powerlifting competition back years ago that was taking place in Emmetsburg.
