Tiger state wrestling update

DES MOINES — The Spencer boys wrestling team took its final season trip to Des Moines Wednesday. Cohen Roth, Logan Huckfelt, Gabe Cauthron, Connor Stickrod, Jace Fullhart, Levi and Kade Johnson and Wyatt Heying all took on the first day of the state tournament. Four Tigers picked up first round victories for Spencer.

Tigers grab overtime win to end season

SIOUX CITY — Spencer wrapped up its regular season on the road Monday night. The boys basketball team traveled to Sioux City North to face off against the Stars. Spencer would finish the regular season with a four-point win over Sioux City North.

Rebels move on after 9-point victory

SIOUX RAPIDS — Sioux Central got its postseason action started, hosting the Belmond-Klemme Broncos on Tuesday. After trailing by two points at the end of the first quarter, the girls bounced back, outscoring Belmond-Klemme 13 to 4 in the second period to take a 21-14 lead at halftime. The Rebels would hang on to defeat the Broncos 44-35 to advance to the second round of the Class 2A Region 3 Tournament.

Sioux Central update at state

DES MOINES — Kaben Morrow and Keagen Riley competed for Sioux Central at the Iowa High School State Tournament starting Wednesday.

Griffin signs to Dakota Wesleyan

SPENCER — Tiger corner infielder Cooper Griffin officially signed his letter of intent to play baseball at the next level at Dakota Wesleyan University. Griffin was joined by his family and Spencer baseball head coach Brian Dirkx when he signed on Tuesday.

8 Tigers ready to pounce at Wells Fargo Arena

DES MOINES — Eight Tiger wrestlers will look to make their mark this week during the Iowa High School State Wrestling Championships at the Wells Fargo Arena. Logan Huckfelt, Jace Fullhart, Gabe Cauthron, Wyatt Heying, Connor Stickrod, Kade Johnson and Levi Johnson will represent Spencer. Eight tied the school record for most state qualifiers in a single season.

Tigges sets school records in 50 and 100

IOWA CITY — Reid Tigges wrote the final chapter of his remarkable high school swimming career on Saturday. Tigges competed in Iowa City at the IHSAA State Swimming Championships in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle. Tigges finished in fourth place in the 100-yard freestyle, setting a school record time of 46.33 in the finals. Reid finished in fifth place in the 50-yard freestyle, with a time of 20.89, which is also a Tiger record for a swimmer.

Burgess strengthens Laker softball

Iowa Lakes Community College head softball coach Katie King announced the signing of Abby Burgess to the 2022-23 recruiting class. Burgess is the daughter of Marty and Paris Burgess and attends Bethlehem Catholic High School in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada. A catcher, Burgess has put up good numbers for the 222s. This past season, she batted .342 and had an on-base percentage of .441, with 36 hits, including 13 doubles, five triples and four home runs.

Lakers Extend win streak to 6

Spencer sets team 3-point record

SPENCER — The Tigers girls basketball team had a duo of games with Sioux City schools. Traveling to face the Sioux City West Wolverines on Thursday, before hosting the Sioux City East Black Raiders on Saturday. Spencer would drop its final game to the Black Raiders 54-50. Spencer would have a bright spot, breaking the Spencer girls record for team three-pointers in a season. The bar is now set with 161 team total threes made.

SHATTERING ALL DOUBTS

FORT DODGE — Spencer recreated history on Saturday at the ISHAA 3A District 4 tournament in Fort Dodge. Tying a school record with eight wrestlers punching their ticket to the state tournament. Logan Huckfelt, Gabe Cauthron, Wyatt Heying, Connor Stickrod, Kade Johnson, Levi Johnson and Jace Fullhart all will represent Spencer. The boys finished in third as a team with 145 points scored.

Tigers drop 2 against Sioux City schools

SPENCER — The Tigers boys basketball team is wrapping up their regular season with a final game Tuesday at Sioux City North. This past weekend, they faced off with two other Sioux City teams. Saturday, they lost to Sioux City East 76-46 after falling behind by 16 at halftime.

Riley and Morrow onto Des Moines

HULL — Sioux Central hit the road Saturday to compete in the ISHAA 1A District 11 tournament at Western Christian High School. Kaben Morrow and Keagen Riley have been leading the Rebels all season, punching their tickets into the state tournament in Des Moines. Sioux Central would finish in tenth as a team.

Rebels finish season 21-0

HINTON — Sioux Central hit the road to face off against Hinton in boys basketball on Thursday. The Rebels stayed perfect all season long, wrapping up their regular season with a 21-0 record, heading into the postseason after defeating the Hinton Blackhawks 63-48.

Local gymnasts medal in competition

STORM LAKE — The sixth annual “A Dream of Spring Invitational” was held Feb. 4-5 in Storm Lake. The USAG-sanctioned meet was hosted by The Turn Around Dance and Gymnastics, home of the GK Storm/Blaze XCEL competitive team. The meet featured over 200 athletes hailing from Waukee, Grimes, Council Bluffs and Sioux City. Spencer has two GK Storm team members, Caitlyn Barr and Aubrie Davis.
