Shirley Brown, 94, of Emmetsburg, died Thursday, Nov. 18, 2021, in Ankeny. Mass of Christian burial is scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 20, 2021, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Emmetsburg. Rev. Bill Schreiber will officiate the service. Visitation will be from 10-11 a.m. Saturday at Martin-Mattice Funeral Home in Emmetsburg. Interment will be at Calvary Cemetery in Ruthven. Arrangements by Martin-Mattice Funeral Home.

Tigerettes to host The Dance Challenge

The Spencer Tigerettes are hosting The Dance Challenge on Nov. 20 at Spencer High School in the field house. The Dance Challenge is a competition featuring more than 200 dancers representing 14 high schools and studios from around the state of Iowa. This event is also a fundraiser for the SHS dance team. Spectator admission is $10, children ages 5 and under are free. The event is scheduled to start at 9 a.m., and the doors will open at 8 a.m. to teams and spectators.

Education Brief - November 12

Sioux Rapids P.E.O. Chapter GJ announces that applications are being accepted from area postsecondary women students for scholarships of $500 to be awarded in February of 2022. To be eligible for a scholarship the applicant must be from, or living in, the Buena Vista County or Clay County area.

SMS Honor Choir members selected

On Tuesday, Nov. 2, 11 students from Spencer Middle School traveled to Le Mars to participate in the Northwest Iowa Junior High Honor Choir Festival. Students selected were Sopranos: Destiny Lawrence, Mary Peterson, Alivia Pierce, Ellie Spieker; Altos: Kelsi Cheevers, Abbey Crew; Jayden Freed, Neveah Gracia, Mikalah Prickett; and Tenors: Robbie Gerlock and Michael Sandoval. Students were divided into two choirs: the treble choir and the bass choir.

Funeral services for Raymond Muller, 104, of Spencer, will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 13, 2021, at Warner Chapel in Spencer. Rev. Tim Frasher will officiate the service. GACO director steps down to join STEMM

Grand Avenue Community Outreach has announced the resignation of its Executive Director Kevin Brown, who is leaving the agency to serve in a similar capacity for the Siouxland Tanzania Educational Medical Ministries -- STEMM.

Tigers garner All-District football honors

Class 4A, District 1 All-District football honors have been announced by the district head coaches.
The Tigers posted a 7-3 record, 4-1 in district play for runner-up honors.
Spencer senior Andrew Hough was honored by Class 4A, District 1 coaches as the co-offensive lineman of the year winner, along with Truman Klein of Webster City.

**SHS After Prom teams round up aluminum funds
The Spencer High School After Prom Committee could not have picked a nicer day for its Pop Can Collection fundraiser. Sunday, teams of parents and students manned the bins, separating the large volume of cans it received from donors during a two-hour window at the Spencer Family YMCA. The group hoped the effort would raise $3,000 toward its overall goal of $10,000.

Stolen property report leads to pursuit, accident, arrest

On the afternoon of Nov. 7, Spencer Police officers were investigating a report of stolen property in the 600 block of Fourth Avenue SE. A vehicle pursuit began in connection with the investigation, involving a black Chevy Tahoe driven by 36-year-old, Tabetha Lee Wilson, of Milford. Officers pursued the Tahoe, until it lost control and came to rest in a ditch in the 1100 mile of 380th Street in Clay County.

Arlene Milton

Graveside services for Arlene Jennie Milton, 93, of Las Vegas, Nevada, formerly of Spencer, will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 12, 2021, at North Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Spencer. Rev. Chris St. Clair will officiate the service. Visitation with the family will be conducted from 12:30 p.m. until the time of service at Warner Funeral Home in Spencer. Milton passed away Wednesday, Oct. 20, 2021, in Las Vegas. Warner Funeral Home of Sutherland is in charge of arrangements.

Norma Jean (Prather) Bartels, 95, of Iowa City, formerly of Spencer, died Saturday, Nov. 6, 2021.
