Eugene Sandvig

Funeral services for Eugene Sandvig, 91, of Spencer, will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 25, 2022, at Warner Chapel in Spencer. Visitation will be conducted one hour prior to the service at the chapel. Burial will be at Poland Township in Marathon. Military services will be conducted by the American Legion Glen Pedersen Post No. 1 and VFW Clay County Post No. 3159. Sandvig passed away on Sunday, Feb. 20, 2022, at St. Luke Lutheran Home in Spencer.

Robert Jesso

Robert J. "Bob" Jesso, 79, died Saturday, Feb. 19, 2022, at Monument Health in Rapid City, South Dakota.

Second After Prom Can Drive announced

The Spencer After Prom Committee will be hosting its final fundraiser for the 2021-22 school year. On Feb. 27, from 1-3 p.m., volunteers will be collecting recyclable bottles and cans directly behind H&N at 713 First Ave. W. in Spencer. Anyone wishing to donate who can not make this date may contact Heidi at 260-0990 for alternate arrangements.

Clay County Pheasants Forever supporters gather for annual banquet

Friends, fun and food were found at the annual banquet for Clay County Pheasant's Forever Saturday at the Clay County Regional Events Center. Several activities were set up for members to take part in, from cornhole to feather tossing, with the chance to win prizes. The event also had kid-themed activities, like minnow racing, set up for the younger members to enjoy.

Both Logan Huckfelt and Cole Rutter returned home to a small gathering at the Spencer High School field house after earning a spot on the podium in Des Moines at the Iowa High School State Wrestling Tournament.

Fear-Hatting recognized at ag event

For her 25 years of service to Ag Outlook, Chamber of Commerce event coordinator Becky Fear-Hatting was honored with a special award during a special ceremony Tuesday morning at the beginning of the day long session. Fear-Hatting has announced her intention to retire from the position, with the 2022 Ag Outlook being her final event.

Wirkus named Rotary Student of the Month

Spencer High School senior Eric Wirkus was recognized by Elli Wiemers and her fellow Rotarians as the January Rotary Student of the Month. Wirkus plans to go into auto body work after attending a two-year program following high school.

Everly Mae Nassiff

Everly Mae Nassiff was born to Brennan and Jenny Nassiff, of Sutherland, on Feb. 14, 2022, at Spencer Hospital. The baby girl weighed 7 pounds, 7 ounces at birth. Grandparents are: David and Tamara Nassiff, of Ankeny; and Rich and Sue Mortensen, of Griswold. Everly is welcomed home by big brother, Fletcher.

Jack Andrew Dickson was born to Bree LaFrance and Mitchel Dickson, of Ruthven, on Feb. 14, 2022, at Spencer Hospital. The baby boy weighed 7 pounds, 13 ounces at birth.

Nash Roghair was born to Nick and Britanee Roghair, of Spencer, on Feb. 13, 2022, at Spencer Hospital. The baby boy weighed 6 pounds, 8 ounces at birth.

Stun gun used on Cherokee teen following pursuit

Spencer Police made a Tuesday morning arrest when they took a 19-year-old Cherokee man into custody following a high speed pursuit which tracked through a 25 mph zone.

FFA chapters honored

Both Spencer and Okoboji FFA chapters were recognized during the Spencer Chamber of Commerce Ag Committees Ag Outlook at the Clay County Regional Events Center Tuesday over the noon hour. Okoboji (above) received second place among the chapters recognized and Spencer (below) was honored with third place. The chapters were judged based on their activities and other criteria.

Nora Patricia Hood was born to Taylor and Michael, of Laurens, on Feb. 10, 2020, at Spencer Hospital. The baby boy weighed 8 pounds, 9 ounces at birth. Grandparents are: Patricia and Paul Gartot, of Iowa; and Denise and Michael Hood, of California. Nora is welcomed home by big sister, Veda Sue; and big brother, Roman Patrick.

Second Eggs & Issues to feature local legislators Saturday

The Legislative Committee of the Spencer Chamber of Commerce will host the second Eggs & Issues legislative forum on Saturday, Feb. 19. The forum is a great opportunity for you to meet our area legislators and discuss the issues that affect Spencer, Clay County and northwest Iowa.
Doors open at 8:30 a.m. in the Spencer City Hall Council Chambers. The live Q&A session will run from 9-10:30 a.m.
