Tigers 5th at West Sioux Invite

HAWARDEN -- Spencer's wrestlers came away with fifth place at the 12-team West Sioux Invitational this past Saturday, scoring 151.5 points which left them just 2.5 points behind fourth place Hinton. Brookings and Central Lyon/George-Little Rock took the top-two spots in the tournament with scores of 235.5 and 227.5 respectively. Westwood came in third with 169.5 points. Le Mars (138) and Sioux Falls Lincoln (112.5) were the only other teams to break into triple digits.

Lady Rebels throttle WB-M

WEST BEND -- It's safe to say West Bend-Mallard's girls never had a chance against Sioux Central Friday night as the Lady Rebels allowed just 10 points in the game and zero in the third quarter of a 56-10 affair.
The game appeared to be within reach for the Wolverines after they trailed 8-4 through one quarter of play, but the Rebels' fast break started to do some work in an 18-3 second quarter.

Spencer pays back North

SIOUX CITY -- Spencer's girls tasted some sweet revenge on Saturday at the CNOS Foundation Classic, beating Sioux City North by a score of 48-39 to make up for a 59-57 overtime defeat that came almost exactly one month earlier.
The Lady Tigers stormed onto the floor, scoring 21 points in the opening frame to take an early 21-15 lead. Offensive production was cut in half during the second quarter, but Spencer still held a 30-25 advantage as they went to the locker room.

Big 2nd half lifts Algona over Lady Tigers

ALGONA -- Spencer's girls put together a strong first half Monday night in non-conference play against the Algona Bulldogs, but a 39-point second half from the home team had the Tigers grasping at the threads late in the fourth as Spencer dropped to 5-5 on the year by a score of 54-49.

Lakers finish 5th at National Duals

Fort Wayne, Indiana -- The Iowa Lakes wrestling team was seeded eighth going into the National Duals this past weekend and brought home a fifth place finish amongst the best NJCAA schools in the country.
Iowa Lakes won four of their five duals, beating No. 17 Darton 30-10, No. 16 Colby 23-18, No. 6 Muskegon 27-15 and No. 14 Harper 27-19 to claim fifth place. Their lone loss came in the second round to No. 1-seeded and eventual champion Clackamas by a score of 31-16.

Shelbie Budmayr signs with Dakota Wesleyan

Iowa Lakes volleyball player, Shelbie Budmayr, recently signed a letter of intent to continue her career at Dakota Wesleyan University beginning this spring.
During her time at Iowa Lakes, Budmayr accumulated 300 kills, 242 digs, 46 aces and 41 total blocks. Budmayr was also a standout student at Iowa Lakes, graduating in three semesters with a 3.810 G.P.A. while majoring in elementary and special education.

Tigers split final home dual

Spencer's boys took to the Spencer Family YMCA pool for dual competition for the final time this season, besting Storm Lake 62-29 and falling to Sioux City 77-17. Sioux City also beat Storm Lake in the dual by a score of 83-8.
Cooper Fox and Brett Hawley led the way for the Tigers as Fox took second in the 200-yard individual medley as well as the 100-yard backstroke and Hawley added another runner-up finish in the 100-yard breastroke.

Sioux Central makes it back-to-back

WEST BEND -- After starting the season 0-7, Sioux Central's boys scored their second win of the season Friday night, taking down West Bend-Mallard 37-32 on the road.
The Rebels weren't pristine in the game, committing 20 turnovers and shooting at a 25 percent clip, but they did just enough to get the win.

Bulldogs edge Spencer in OT

ALGONA -- The Tigers showed plenty of fight on the road Monday night against the Algona Bulldogs, battling back from multiple small deficits throughout the game to force overtime with a score of 49-49. However, Algona's leading scorer for the season Luke Terhark, who had been bottled up for just two points through regulation scored all six of the Bulldogs' points in the extra frame to lead his team to a 55-53 triumph over the Tigers.

Funderburg's 23 not enough for Tigers to top West

SIOUX CITY -- Spencer's boys came up five points short of victory at the CNOS Foundation Classic on Saturday as they fell 71-66 to Sioux City North despite a 23-point performance from junior Preston Funderburg which included a perfect 7-7 showing from the land of three.
The game stayed tight for the full 32 minutes as the Wolverines took a 16-13 lead after the first eight minutes. Spencer trimmed the deficit by one in a 17-16 second stanza for a 32-30 halftime score.

Harold Bell Ness was born Feb. 28, 1924, to Adolph and Martha Ness on their farm near Linn Grove.
Harold has one sister, Ardyce Zinn, who lives in Storm Lake.
Harold got his education at the Rembrandt School.
He enjoyed farming at an early age and eventually took over the family farm.

The world watched in horror last week as terrorists, armed with high powered weapons and blind, rabid faith, savagely gunned down a dozen people in a Paris magazine office. The horror continued as another member of the terror cell killed a police officer, then held hostages in a kosher grocery store, murdering four more innocents. Latest reports say the shooting of a random jogger in Paris may well be linked to the criminals.

Services for Ember Smith, 3, of Ruthven, will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2015, at Warner Chapel in Spencer. Rev. Dale Hodges will officiate the service.
Visitation will be conducted beginning one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
Burial will be conducted at Garfield Cemetery in Webb.
Ember passed away Wednesday, Jan. 7, at the Palo Alto County Hospital in Emmetsburg.
Warner Funeral Home of Spencer is in charge of arrangements.

Frances Slinger

Services for Frances Peters Slinger, 88, of Hartley, will be conducted privately at a later date at Pleasant View Cemetery in Hartley.
Public visitation with the family present will be conducted beginning 4 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 13, at Warner Funeral Home in Spencer.
Burial will be conducted at Pleasant View Cemetery in Hartley.
Slinger passed away Monday, Jan. 5, at Community Memorial Health Center in Hartley.

Marcia Gustin

Services for Marcia Gustin, 78, of Royal, will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2015, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Royal. Rev. Charles Gilbert will officiate the service.
Visitation with the family present was conducted beginning 5 p.m. Monday at the Warner Funeral Home in Spencer.
Burial will be conducted at Willow Creek Cemeter in Royal.
Gustin passed away Thursday, Jan. 8, at Spencer Hospital.
